DOOL's Corday Cans Langan
"Days of our Lives" Executive Producer Ken Corday announced on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 that Tom Langan will no longer serve as head writer and executive producer of "Days of our Lives." Former associate head writers Paula Cwikly and Peter Brash were named new co-head writers of "Days of our Lives," effectively immediately. According to the DOOL head honcho the reason for the executive shuffle is simple. "Tom Langan and I had creative differences," stated Ken Corday. "And a change was in order."
As the Turtle-Run message board rumor mill began to pick up on this breaking news, many of Turtle-Run's DOOL posters were delighted to hear that Langan was gone. Comments like: "Yippee, let's throw a party;" "HALLELUJAH;" and "Join me, my fellow turtles, in a chorus of DING DONG, THE WITCH IS DEAD!!!" make an obvious statement that Corday's decision to give Langan walking papers is garnering a positive response from the fans. But why does everyone seem so delighted to see Langan go? Let me know your reasons in the "Criticize the Critic " folder on the Turtle-Run message boards. I look forward to hearing your views. One thing is certain. Regardless of the politics and/or the storyline differences, getting the boot right before the holidays has gotta be tough on the bootee. Unfortunately, end of year lay-offs are a business as usual in all types of business. I do wish the best for Tom Langan, and hope he lands his next gig soon.
Turtle-Run congratulates Paula Cwikly and Peter Brash on their new co-headwriter status. Cwikly has been associated with "Days of our Lives" and NBC since 1991, most recently as associate head writer and previously as director of daytime promotions and director of daytime programming for the network. A twenty-year veteran scribe of daytime dramas, Peter Brash has been with "Days of our Lives" since 1998.
Y&R's Doug Davidson to Host Rose Parade
Doug Davidson (Paul, "The Young and the Restless") and Miss USA, Kandace Krueger, will host THE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE, to be broadcast live from Pasadena, Calif., Tuesday, Jan. 1 (11:00 AM-1:30 PM, ET/8:00-10:30 AM, PT) on the CBS Television Network. The annual New Year's Day pageant, which is celebrating its 113th year, is renowned for its large, elaborate floral floats and award-winning marching bands.
The parade will kick off the New Year with a tribute to the United States highlighting many fine American traditions. Included will be a special message from President George W. Bush, the National Anthem, the unfurling of a giant American flag and an original song by country music star Martina McBride. Davidson and Krueger will provide commentary about the parade's majestic floats, high-stepping equestrian units and spirited marching bands from around the nation as they make their way along the five-and-a-half mile route. Regis Philbin is the parade's grand marshal.
This marks Davidson's fifth year as a host of THE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES< PARADE. He is best known for his portrayal of Detective Paul Williams in television's number one daytime drama,"The Young and the Restless," in which he has starred for two decades. His television credits also include stints on "Coming Up Roses," "The All-American Thanksgiving Parade" and "The Price Is Right," all on the CBS Network. He also appeared in the theatrical film "Fraternity Row" as well as in the television movie "The Initiation of Sarah," the mini-series "I'll Take Manhattan" and in the long-running series, "Diagnosis Murder," all on CBS.
Kandace Krueger is spending her 12 months as Miss USA acting as goodwill ambassador, educating women about early detection of breast and ovarian cancers. She is working with such renowned organizations as NABCO, the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund and Gilda's Club to raise money for the diseases.
DOOL's James Reynolds On a Mission to Entertain the Troops Overseas
The USO will send James Reynolds (Abe, "Days of Our Lives") overseas this holiday season to bring a "touch of home" to American service members. As part of "Operation Starflight Freedom," Reynolds will be on hand to sign autographs, tour military facilities and mingle with the troops. Rap artist Coolio will be joining Reynolds on the trip.
But why is Reynolds being recruited to cheer the troops? Could be because way before he was Abe on DOOL, he was a Marine who saw active duty!
Reynolds joined the Marines following graduation from high school. After boot camp he was stationed in Hawaii and assigned to the Information Service Office where he became a reporter for the service newspaper, "The Windward Marine." Later Reynolds was sent to Vietnam where he served for a year in a variety of units, including battlefield reporting and combat, in and around Chu Lai.
Reynolds is honored to be participating in "Operation Starflight Freedom." For more than 60 years, the USO (United Service Organizations) has "Delivered America" to America's military personnel. The USO is a Congressionally chartered, non-profit organization, and is not a government agency. Reynolds will join the ranks of other celebrities that have toured for their country, including Steve Martin, Salma Hayek, Sheryl Crow, Dennis Franz, James Garner and many others. Stay tuned to Turtle-Run for our exclusive interview with Reynolds regarding visiting the troops upon his return to the states.
Speaking of Reynolds, we reported a few weeks ago that he was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. After almost 20 years of portraying Abe Carver on "Days of Our Lives," this is his first NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series. "It's quite a compliment," shared Reynolds. "I'm so happy that my work has been appreciated, as well as everyone's work on the show, with my nomination. It's a tremendous honor."
Winners will be announced at the 33rd Annual NAACP Image Awards ceremony on February 23 in Los Angeles.
AMC's Michael E. Knight & Cady McClainLand Starring Roles in "The Retreat"
In a rare move for Hollywood feature filmmakers, producer Shannon Murphy and her producing partners took a risk in casting not one, not two, but three stars from continuing dramas to headline their independent feature film "The Retreat" currently in production in Falmouth and Boston, Massachusetts. Michael E. Knight and Cady McClain (Tad and Dixie, AMC) were chosen for their roles over 200 other hopefuls, including100 from primetime and100 from daytime.
"We auditioned in LA, Boston and New York," said Murphy over the phone from the film's production office on location in Massachusetts. "Susan Willette was the casting director, and based on a suggestion from a representative of my company who worked at Walt Disney Studios, I specifically asked her for some soap talent to audition."
Murphy admitted that the coincidence of casting two actors from the same soap would be risky. "But they were both so very talented, and after watching them work, there is no doubt in my mind that we cast the right people," Murphy said. In fact, she shared that there was no doubt from the moment Knight and McClain read for their respective parts. "They were both offered their roles at the audition," she said.
But "All My Children" fans take note. "The Retreat" is not "All My Children," and the parts Knight and McClain play are a far cry from Tad and Dixie.
"It's a dark story," revealed Murphy. "It is a psychological drama about two sets of brothers whose parents died when they were young. They come back to their summer home as adults and discover dark secrets about their past. When their parents died they were raised by a governess in their summer home who abused three of them, and they discover a dark secret about the fourth."
Both Knight and McClain are in roles in this film that are completely out of character for them. "They do not interact as a couple at all," said Murphy. "Michael's character is one of the four brothers. He is actually divorcing someone else in the script. Cady plays the girlfriend of Michael's character's brother."
The film got Murphy's attention when director Brad Jacques, who had worked with Murphy on another project, brought her a copy of writer/producer Nick Potter's script.
"It's a fascinating project. The story was originally set on the Pacific Coast Highway in southern CA," said Murphy. "It's about a wealthy family that had a magnificent summer estate." The kind of old money, blue-blood opulence that is not found on the West Coast. "What was available on the West Coast just didn't fit the script," Murphy explained. "As I have a home in New England, I was familiar with the East Coast. I had done high-end architectural design (on the East Coast) and I knew these locations. We are getting tremendous value out of the locations. The cinematography is fabulous."
Along with Knight and McClain, "The Retreat" stars another continuing drama veteran, Josh Cox. "Josh, who plays Dr. Peter Riggs on Lifetime's 'Strong Medicine,' has also done 'One Life to Live, and he was even on 'All My Children' with Michael at one point," said Murphy. Cox's other credits include "Friends," "Once and Again," and "Providence."
But getting popular continuing drama actors away from their continuing duties can be complicated. Luckily, "Strong Medicine" had wrapped production for the season, so Cox was available, and Knight and McClain's "All My Children" schedule allowed for this stint away from their soap opera home. "The timing was right," said Murply. "Michael had to be back in New York for two days, and he had to do some looping out of Boston, but he was otherwise pretty free this month." Getting McClain required a tad more finagling, but producers were able to work that out with AMC.
Two weeks into production, with another two weeks of production yet to complete, Murphy couldn't be more pleased and delighted with the results so far. "The actors are incredible to work with," she said. "Their personalities are wonderful both on set and off. They are definitely a lot of fun." She also was quick to point out that Knight and McClain should work more in film. "I definitely think they should do more movies!"
Has working with mega soap celebrities like Knight and McClain caused any problems for the production company? Quite the opposite. The fans have come out in droves to see the stars and that's just fine with Murphy.
"One of the first scenes we shot involved the lighting of a Christmas tree in the town," Murphy revealed. "Normally, 3000-5000 of the townspeople show up for the tree lighting. But we had announced that Michael Knight and Cady McClain were going to be there filming scenes from "The Retreat," and it was reported that over 10,000 people showed up looking for Michael and Cady!"
So, the big question is, where can you see "The Retreat?" As of this writing, Murphy was fielding offers from theatrical distributors, looking for the best deal. "We are also interested in pursuing the film festival circuit," Murphy said. If going theatrical isn't in the cards, Murphy will look toward a cable or network television broadcast.
As the World Turns Welcomes Peyton List as "Lucy"
Several weeks ago we reported that Peyton List would be joining the cast of "As the World Turns" in the role of Lucy Montgomery. List began airing last Friday, December 14, 2001. Her character, Lucy, is the daughter of Sierra and Craig Montgomery, and upon returning to Oakdale, will attempt to break free from her overprotective parents and develop her own true identity. Will she succeed?
"Peyton's character exposes Craig Montgomery's vulnerability and sensitivity," said ATWT EP, Chris Goutman. "(It's) a side he likes to keep buried within. We're thrilled to have her on board."
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, List began her acting and modeling careers just three years ago and has already accrued quite an accomplished list of credits. She has appeared on NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," and HBO's "Sex in the City." Her feature film credits include "Enemy of the State" and "Washington Square." But her talent doesn't end with acting. List studied ballet with the School of American Ballet in New York City and starred in The Nutcracker with the Moscow Ballet.
