Chatting up soap fans and Outstanding storylines

Hi Suds Buds!

It's great getting to know some of you during our weekly Monday night Soap Chats (8:30-9:30 PM ET, Suds Buzz Chat Room). If any of you are having trouble getting into the room, or participating in the chat once you're in the room, please email and let us know. It's an All-Soaps Chat, so come on in and let me hear all about your favorite show! Hope you can make it tonight and every Monday evening. :o)

In the meantime, please use the Suds Buzz Chat Room at your leisure. We only have the one scheduled chat so far, so the room is available at all other times. Take advantage of this while you can. Eventually we will have additional "official" chats that will tie up the room. Now's the time to stake your claim! You can even establish your own chat groups. Say you're a fan of GH and want to meet other GH fans and chat about things in Port Charles. Post on the TRO GH Message Board that you'd like to chat and suggest a day and time. This way, all the GH fans will know when other GH fans will be in the room. Make sense? Even I may pop in! If you get ten or more regular chatters on a consistent basis, we'll consider making it an official TRO chat! Keep me posted.

Now, on with the soaps!

For the past few weeks we've talked about the writers of soaps. Theirs is a demanding discipline, and for the most part, they do a wonderful job creating entertainment for us to enjoy five days a week. Yes, there are peaks and valleys. But every once in a while, they surprise us with a truly memorable story. Just this past year, Days of Our Lives did it with Sami's near execution story. Passions is doing it now with Luis and Sheridan, creating soapdom's next super couple. One Life to Live also surprised me recently with the twists and turns of the Bo/Lindsay/Nora/Sam story. Between Catherine Hickland's EMMY nomination-worthy performance (I'm telling you again, Catherine. Submit those scenes!), and the unpredictability of the writing, I was on the edge of my sofa. B&B also had us clinging to our seats when Amber (Adrienne Franz) revealed the truth about the baby to every single Forrester in town! Another Emmy nomination-worthy performance.

If the writing of a soap, coupled with genuine, heartfelt performances, makes you laugh, cry, or want to shake the television set, you are being moved by the story to feel something. Happiness. Pathos. Passion. Frustration. Having the ability to evoke that emotion, any emotion, means the writing is working. Soaps may experience those peaks and valleys, but make no mistake about it. The writers of soaps are doing something right.

What would you say was the most memorable storyline of all time? What were your favorites this past year? Please share your thoughts in the "Criticize the Critic" folder on the Turtle Run Message Boards.

Watch the Soap Opera Digest Awards this Friday, March 10, 2000 at 8 PM on NBC. You voted for your favorites, now tune in Friday and see who wins. Plus, join http://www.soapdigest.com for a pre-show chat from 1 PM ET (10 AM PT) to 4 PM ET (1 PM PT) and for a live behind-the-scenes chat during the show beginning at 8 PM ET (5 PM PT). Tell them we sent you!

Congratulations to DOOL director Herbert D. Stein, who has been nominated for a Director's Guild of America Award. Remember our mention of memorable storylines a few paragraphs ago? Stein's nomination is based on the episode that dealt with Sami's gut-wrenching execution. (Episode #8557, aired June 2, 1999). Winners will be announced at the DGA Awards Dinner on March 11th.

Did you realize DOOL will be on the air 35 years this June? There are still seats available for the 35th Anniversary Fan Club Luncheon, which will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2000 at the Universal Hilton at Universal City, CA. The cost is $85.00 (U.S.) and you can reserve your place by sending a check for the full amount to Days Fan Club, P.O. Box 11508 Burbank, CA USA 91510-1508
Two other events are also planned: a continental breakfast hosted by Sami (Alison Sweeney) the morning of the Luncheon (Cost $30.00 U.S. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
