Days of our Lives Celebrates Taping of 9,000 Episodes

Days of our Lives, the cornerstone of the NBC daytime line-up and one of the most popular daytime dramas in the world, celebrated the taping of its 9,000th episode on Friday, February 9, 2001 with a party on the Days stage at NBC studios in Burbank, CA.

Days of our Lives, which premiered on November 8, 1965 as a half-hour drama, expanded to an hour in April of 1975. Although Days of our Lives was created by the late Ted Corday, Irma Philips and Allan Chase, the soap was essentially Ted Cordays project and it is under the Corday Productions Inc. banner that it has prospered. With the death of Ted Corday in 1966, his widow Betty took over the Executive Producer role and evolved Days into the innovative, multi-generational soap opera that it remains today. Betty Corday passed away in 1987. Ken Corday, son of the late Ted and Betty Corday, became Executive Producer in 1986 and currently helms the daytime drama along with Head Writer and Executive Producer Tom Langan.

The last few years have been the most extraordinary in all the history of Days of our Lives, proclaims Ken Corday. In the spring of 2000, Days of our Lives was honored with both the Directors Guild Award and the Writers Guild Award. In February of 2000, Days was named Favorite Soap Opera for the second consecutive year at the broadcast of the TV Guide Awards, the largest poll in television history. Days was recently nominated a third consecutive year for a Prism Award, recognizing the fetal alcohol syndrome storyline of Hopes baby. (The Prism Awards, selected by the Entertainment Industries Council, honors responsible programming of drug, alcohol, and addiction depiction.)

At 9,000 episodes and counting, Days of our Lives is creatively stronger than ever, proudly states Ken Corday. After an eight-year absence, Matt Ashford recently returned as Jack Devereaux amongst great fanfare, and Melissa Reeves return as Jennifer Horton last September has been a triumph. I am most excited that during the past few years, Head Writer Tom Langan has brilliantly focused a great deal of attention on establishing young characters with strong family ties that are the future of Salem. Tom Langans introduction of an aged Belle, Brady, Shawn, and Philip (Kirsten Storms, Kyle Lowder, Jason Cook, and Jay Kenneth Johnson) along with the introduction of Chloe (Nadia Bjorlin) and Mimi (Farah Fath) has rejuvenated the show. Fran Bascom, our casting director, has assembled a dynamic group of young actors that keep getting better and better. The future of Salem looks very bright indeed.

Just prior to commemorating 9,000 episodes of television, Days of our Lives recently pulled out all the stops with the shows most thrilling storyline to date; the coronation and subsequent massacre at Princess Gretas Coronation. As previously reported here at Turtle Run, in a historic and unprecedented casting coup, Days of our Lives was visited during the week of February 5, 2001 by soap opera stars from programs that have aired on all three networks. The soap royalty making guest appearances on Days of our Lives represented the most comprehensive list of soap opera acting credits ever assembled by a single program.

On an international front, the past few years have also seen tremendous growth for Days of our Lives with successful launches in the United Kingdom, France, Romania, Belgium, Singapore, Zimbabwe, Kenya and in The African Ivory Coast. In January of 2000, Days of our Lives won the Golden Boomerang Award for Favorite Soap Opera by the readers of Australias TV Soap Magazine. Last year, the readers of Australias Inside Soap Magazine also named Days of our Lives as Best Soap Opera.

Days of our Lives continues to be a ratings success in the key demographics. Days has been the top rated network daytime program in women 18-34 this season and has held the top-rank in that demo for 284 of the past 285 weeks.

9,000 episodes is a landmark achievement in television, proclaims Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Entertainment. Congratulations to Ken Corday and the entire team that brings us Days of our Lives.

The non-stop pace of soaps makes the cast and crew of Days of our Lives among the hardest working in television. This 9,000th episode is testimony to the talent and commitment they bring to their work, states Sheraton Kalouria, Senior Vice President, NBC Daytime Programs.

Len Grossi, President of Columbia TriStar Television offers his congratulations to Ken Corday and the Days of our Lives family: Were delighted to be a part of this landmark event. Just think of what it means for Ken and the entire Days family to achieve the 9,000 episode milestone-its a testament to the outstanding creativity, dedication and staying power to everyone connected with this show. We wish them every success as they continue with their remarkable run.

Episode 9,000 is scheduled to air on NBC February 26, 2001.

Days 9,000th Episode Party - You asked, We Got the Answers!

It was all hustle and bustle on stages 2 and 4 of NBC Studios in beautiful downtown Burbank as the cast and crew of Days of our Lives broke for lunch and got ready to celebrate the taping of the 9,000th episode. Days stars like Peggy McKay (Caroline) who were not even scheduled to work that day, made a point to come to the set and help celebrate this milestone. "I would not have missed it for the world," said McKay as the festivities were winding down. "This is extraordinary. (Days) is like my family. I've done many shows. Nighttime and daytime, and this is one of the nicest teams. The crew, the actors, the directors, we all get along great. We all have a good time and we do our work well."

Before cast and crew cut the 9,000 episode cakes (there was one cake shaped like the number nine, and three cakes shaped like zeros), Executive Producer Ken Corday paid tribute to his parents, Ted and Betty Corday, and the World War Two Generation in which the family values portrayed on Days of our Lives are based. An enlarged photograph of Ted and Betty Corday that was taken on Victory in Japan Day (August 15, 1945) was displayed in a place of honor at one side of the cakes. Blown-up, vintage black and white portraits of Frances Reid (Alice Horton) and the late Macdonald Carey (Tom Horton) were placed on the other side of the cake. As you know, original cast members Frances Reid, John Clarke (Mickey Horton) and 26-year veteran Suzanne Rogers (Maggie Horton) still reside in Salem!

Then, Sheraton Kalouria, Senior Vice President of Daytime Programming for NBC congratulated the cast and crew and presented the Days family with a wicker treasure chest containing 9,000 Hersey's Kisses, one kiss signifying each episode of NBC's number one daytime drama. Kalouria also gave Turtle Run a big hello!

But wait! Several Turtle Run Days fans had some burning questions to ask the stars and/or producers of the show! Stormy and P wanted to know what has kept Frances Reid on Days since day one! "The love of work," Reid said with a smile. "I had retired from the theater after being in the theater 20 years. I had done the ingenue tour and I was suddenly too old for theater. So, Ted (Corday) offered me this, and I said oh - I'd love to do it for a little while. And 35 years later - I am still doing it." Reid continued, saying that she loves the work and loves the family that the show has become for her. Stormy also wanted to know why Alice always seems to be making donuts and would Reid share the recipe? "No I can't," she said, again with a smile. "It's much too big a secret!"

Franndays wanted to know why Stefano hates the Bradys with such vengence. "I don't know the answer to that question," replied Joseph Mascolo (Stefano) in all seriousness. "You see that guy over there with the beard," he continued, pointing to Tom Langan? "You'll have to ask him!" Rest assured, however, Mascolo could not be happier playing the character of Stefano. "I love it," he said. "Stefano is a great character, and I will play it as long as the people want it. When they don't, I am gone." Mascolo enjoys the way the character is written, as it allows him to bring certain things to the role. "I have been able to bring cultural aspects to Stefano. Like his love of classical music and art, because of my background. And also in making Stefano a multi-dimensional human being. Most of the time there are the bad guys and the good guys. The good guys are so good they are boring, and the bad guys so bad that you want to spit on them. As an actor, I am trying very hard to bring as many 'colors' to the character of Stefano as possible. That may be why people don't know what he is going to do next, and he becomes dramatically interesting, and fun for me to play!"

In continued pursuit of franndays question regarding Stefano and his hate for the Bradys', I never caught up with Tom Langan, but I did nab EP, Ken Corday. "It's a big secret. Even Lexie doesn't know!" he joked as Renee Jones (Lexie) happened by for a big hug. The only thing that Corday would reveal is that Stefano's hatred for the Bradys is rooted in something that transpired in Ireland a long time ago. "It's all about Ireland," said Corday. "The story will play out and we will find out all about why sometime this year," Corday assured me.

However, Peggy McKay (Caroline Brady) has her own theories. "I think something happened in a factory," said McKay. "I think that something happened to Stefano's family in a factory in Ireland, and the Bradys have something to do with it. But more than that, I don't know. They don't tell us! Although sometimes we read what is going to happen in the magazines!" she continued with a laugh, implying that the magazines sometimes know what is going to happen before the actors do! "But I could certainly get into the Irish story. Bo is my son, and Victor is his father. Maybe Victor could fight off Stefano DiMera. If any man could do it, Victor could. He is shrewd and, need be, just as ruthless. But he always had a soft touch for Carolyn. He would support Carolyn. In fact, many a time Carolyn went behind her husband's back to ask Victor for help, and he was right there to help her. "

Caption: Days stars Kristian Alfonso (Hope) and Joseph Mascolo (Stefano)
5 Days in One Week had a burning question for Kristain Alfonso. Is she married? "No," responded Alfonso with a big smile. "But there is a special person in my life right now. However, I am very flattered that a young gentleman would ask that question. "

Next, I approached Jason Cook to ask jrb's question, why aren't Shawn and Belle together already? But lo and behold, the buzzer sounded, lunch break was over, and Jason was back to work, running lines for his next scene! More of your questions answered the next time I get to Days!

Passions strikes another Media Milestone as Tabitha Reads Online!

Credit: (c) 2001, turtle-run.com
Caption: Juliet Mills (Tabitha) reads Hidden Passions live online!
In yet another convergence coup by Passions, NBC Daytime and NBCi, Juliet Mills (Tabitha) read excerpts from the HarperCollins book, Hidden Passions, live online on Thursday, February 15, 2001. The reading took place in the executive offices of Passions on the studio lot where the show is taped. Juliet Mills, still in costume from the days taping of her scenes as Tabitha, was surrounded by copies of the book and a large one-sheet promotional poster. Mills sat in a nook that appeared to be part of an actual bookstore! In reality, it was the magic of set dressing, as this "bookstore" reading nook was created right in the conference room of the Passions offices! The reading was heard as a live audio feed to fans who downloaded media players in order to hear "Tabitha" read from her own book. After the reading, which lasted about 15 minutes, Juliet, both as herself, and as the character of Tabitha, responded to questions from the cyber audience. The questions ranged from what other character would she love to play on the show ("Why, Julian, of course!) to at what age did she begin her acting career? ("Sixteen.") Next week, we will reprint portions of the transcript and give you the url to hear it again online.

Congrats to Port Charles' Marie Wilson

On Monday, February 12, 2001, Marie Wilson (Karen, PC) and producer Michael Wilson, celebrated the birth of their daughter, Skye Alexandra Wilson! Welcome to the world, Skye, and warm congratulations to your folks! :o)

More Days News!

Congratulations are again in order for Days of our Lives. Days was nominated for a third consecutive year for a Prism Award, which recognizes responsible programming of drug, alcohol, and addiction depiction. Days was nominated for the storyline in which Hope's baby, J.T., was diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The Prism Awards, voted on by the Entertainment Industries Council, will be handed out in a ceremony on April 4, 2001 that will be televised at a later date.
