Dear Suds Buds,

What a pleasant surprise awaited me in my email box today.  I usually check email first thing in the morning as I’m on the west coast and the business day is already well under way on the east coast.  But today, there was a very early west coast email that immediately caught my attention. It announced that former AMC star, Eva La Rue, who only just departed her role as Maria Santos Grey mere weeks ago, had landed a role on the popular CBS primetime drama, CSI: Miami.    Here’s what the press release said:

“HOLLYWOOD, CA …  Eva La Rue will join the cast of CBS’s hugely popular prime time drama, CSI:MIAMI.  Inspired by the top-rated series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: MIAMI is a fast-paced drama that follows a South Florida team of forensic investigators who use both cutting-edge scientific methods and old-fashioned police work to solve crimes.  La Rue will play the role of cold case lab investigator, Natalia Boa Vista.

La Rue is best known for her Emmy nominated role as Dr. Maria Santos on All My Children.  In addition to her daytime role, this past season she had a recurring role as George’s sister on The George Lopez Show and she worked as a correspondent and part time weekend anchor for EXTRA!  Currently La Rue can be seen as a Co-Host for the E! Style Network’s Modern Girls Guide to Life.

The fourth season of CSI:MIAMI with Eva La Rue begins on Monday, September 19, 2005.  The program airs at 10:00-11:00 PM (ET/PT).”

Congratulations Eva!  Soapdom couldn’t be more delighted for the actress. This is the second time she’s left AMC.  In 1997, she departed Pine Valley for a primetime sit com called Head Over Heels.  Any actor who leaves the rather secure world of a contract role in daytime drama for a new prime time series takes a major risk.  Networks cancel new primetime shows sometimes after the first or second episode.  If there are no ratings, the show goes.  That’s what happened to Head Over Heels, although I must admit, the concept, material and even La Rue’s character were all sub par, in my humble opinion. Let me clarify that statement.  It was not La Rue’s performance that was wanting, but the material she was relegated to perform.  Therein lied the rub.

This time, however, La Rue's venture into primetime is leading her to a well-established show with a strong following.  The CSI franchise is ranked right up there with the very successful Law & Order shows.  Odds are CSI:Miami won’t be cancelled this season. The material and quality of the show is light years ahead of  Head Over Heels.  Looks like La Rue has found herself a new home.  Again our congrats.

But what about the soap she left behind?  Her character, Maria on AMC, wasn’t killed off. Instead, she took her daughter and went to live in California, near her brother, Mateo and his wife, Haley.  Would La Rue ever consider a return to Pine Valley?  Stay tuned to Soapdom.com to find out.
