Dear Suds Buds,

Last week I talked about the jolt we as viewers get when a new actor takes over a role from a fan favorite who moves on to pursue other endeavors, and how it takes some time for us to get acclimated to the new face in the role.

What inspired last week’s column were comments in regard to the Belle recast on Days.  Posters on the Days of our Lives boards at Soapdom were less than happy with the performance of Charity Rahmer as nuBelle after only one day of her airing in the role.  The crux of my column was to hold off judgment until the new actor got more comfortable playing Belle.

But lo and behold, the very next day -- Tuesday of last week to be precise -- Days announced that they were replacing Charity Rahmer with newcomer, Martha Anne Madison. We broke the story here:  Full Story    Looks like the powers that be at Days of our Lives felt that the character would be better served with yet another actress in the role.

I can’t help but feel really bad for Rahmer.  She probably never should have been cast in the first place. Although she has a certain sweet innocence about her, the rigor and demands of a front burner soap opera storyline might have been too much for her level of experience and expertise.  I wish her the best in future endeavors.

All this brings me to a recent conversation I had with General Hospital’s Natalia Livingston (Emily). We talked about a number of things including the trepidation she felt when she took over the role from daytime favorite, Amber Tamblyn.

“I was definitely very nervous because she was -- is -- such a great actress and she was so loved on the set, so I was definitely very nervous about it, “ Livingston confided. “But I hope that I’ve made Emily my own. That’s what I have been trying to do.”

Livingston also admitted that she consulted with Tamblyn about the role.  “I’ve talked to Amber and she’s been really nice.  We talked about her new job, too, and the differences in the work schedules. She works 14 hours days now, and she misses all the good times on GH.” Tamblyn now stars as the lead character in Joan of Arcadia airing prime time on CBS.  She has been nominated for a 2004 Emmy award for her work as “Joan.”

All in all, having to fill some pretty big shoes aside, Livingston is truly delighted to be Emily. Thanks to the current Nikolas/Mary/Emily/Lucky storyline, the show is keeping her pretty busy.

“Yes, it really is, but it’s wonderful,” she said.   “I am so grateful for all the work. I love going in there every day. I am very blessed and I am very happy.”

Guess what I am getting at here it that actors are people first. Their job is to entertain us and they try very hard every to do that.  Taking over a role from a fan favorite is daunting for any actor.  Sometimes a recast can truly capture our hearts and our attention.  Other times, it just doesn’t click.  Maybe, even though Rahmer did not shine quite so bright as Belle, I am sure she tried her best to win us and the powers that be over.  I hope that she will soon find a role that is better suited to her, and I wish her only the best.

Til the top of next week,
