Linda Marshall-SmithDear Suds Buds,

Did you ever have one of those days where your brain totally freezes over? I am talking Ice Age kinda frozen. Real cold. Well, welcome to the club. That's just about how I am feeling today. It is not even five PM and I could swear I have worked 20 hours already today.

Which brings me to one of my major peeves about soapdom. No one ever really works on soaps. Oh on Y&R they do some stuff at Jabot, and on B&B they do some stuff at the house of Forrester and/or the house of Spectra. Sometimes they even go to work on AMC, but no work ever gets done. Characters sit around their offices dishing about other characters. But I have never seen one soap character actually put in a good honest 20-hour work day. LOL. I suppose seeing characters typing or answering phones or even negotiating contracts or researching their next legal case would prove too boring and lackluster for us viewers. So, instead we get fed steamy love scenes, dire circumstances, evil twins and returns of amnesiac characters that need to be re-acclimated to their soap society. Come to think of it -- that's far more fun!

AMC's Marj Dusay Thanks Her Fans!

It a surprising turn of events ABC Daytime has released Marj Dusay (Vanessa, AMC) from her contract. As soon as the word spread over the internet, fans took action. An online petition was created, as was a snail-mail campaign to the network and the print publications.

OnSunday, September 8, 2002 at 7:04 PM, Dusay posted a message on her official chat club message board, "Dusay Does Say," to thank all her fans and friends who have been so supportive on the web.

"To my friends on the web. Thanks to all of my wonderful chatty friends. You are so kind and it does make a girl feel good!!!!

"Of course, I am disappointed in leaving the show, but I am also well aware that these things happen. At least I have been given some great moments to play in the last 6 to 9 months. That's a lot to be grateful for. Some never get that chance to really explore and play with a character. They threw me some amazing curves to play. I guess some worked and some maybe didn't. I certainly agree with some fans, who said the Proteus story went on far to long. That always says they are fishing for an answer of what to do.

"When you leave a character, you are always saddened in some way because you usually believe she has so much more to expose of her personality. That is the frustrating part of leaving. That, and leaving the friends and what becomes a family to you. Mainly, leaving the crew, our makeup, hair, wardrobe and casting people, and everyone in the offices. That's the painful part of leaving a show; you're really leaving a family. I do really love and appreciate all they do for us sometimes hassled and neurotic actors. God love 'em for putting up with us.

"The good part is that I am honestly looking forward to some time off to begin doing some of my dream traveling (that I have put off for far too long.) Don't you think I should try stirring up things along the Italian and French Rivera(s)? I think I will try!!

"Anyway, I just have to say to all of you------thank you, thank you! I have always heard that expression; 'my heart swells,' and I know what that means now. The fact that you would all take the time, effort and thought to support me in this way is so beautiful to me. God bless! Love, Marj"

Dusay is scheduled to attend the AMC Fan Club luncheon in NY this month.

DOOL Casts Charity Fundraiser in Storyline and Real Life.

The September 20 episode of Days of our Lives includes cancer survivors as part of Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month. NBC's flagship soap will be recreating The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual walk, Light The Night, on Friday, September 20, 2002, in a special tribute in honor of Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month and as part of its ongoing leukemia storyline.

This nationally aired episode includes 14 blood cancer survivors as they participate in the show's fictional walk. September's annual observance is a time to commemorate the people whose lives are touched by blood cancers and to support efforts to find cures for these diseases.

Through a strategic alliance with Days of our Lives and Mrs. Fields Cookies, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is being included in a national retail promotion that will launch in October at 450 Mrs. Fields locations and has been included in Days of our Lives' storyline. Days of our Lives' Nadia Bjorlin's character, Chloe Lane, has been diagnosed with leukemia. In real life, the actress' father, famous Swedish composer, Ulf Bjorlin, passed away from leukemia. Nadia Bjorlin is currently serving as the charity's Light The Night ambassador and Days has incorporated Light The Night content as part of its storyline this month.

"Every five minutes, someone in this country finds out they have leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma - over 300 people per day, and every nine minutes, someone dies from blood-related cancer, and over 640,000 people are currently fighting these diseases," said Greg Meng, senior vice president of Corday Productions, the show's production company. "We are thrilled to have the ability to heighten awareness for both The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and its annual fund raising event. Our cast members have been extremely supportive and are looking forward to participate in Light The Night walks in Southern California and Las Vegas."

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's 60 chapters host its official Light The Night walks nationally in September and October. Light The Night walks are dramatic and hopeful events, in which participants brighten the night skies, carrying lighted balloons -- white for survivors and red for supporters.

Last year, the nationwide walk raised $10.5 million and the Society hopes to exceed that amount this year. The money raised funds research to find cures for blood cancer, namely leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and helps people who have these diseases.

Individuals and teams of people are welcome to join the walk. There is no registration fee, but anyone who raises $25 or more will carry one of the Society's illuminated balloons. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to honor loved ones by placing their names on special dedication banners.

DOOL Stars to Appear at Several Real-Life Light the Night Walks

Several stars from the NBC daytime drama Days of our Lives will be making special appearances at various Light The Night walk locations.  Light the Night is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's annual evening event to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. Funds raised support the Society's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Nationwide, 220 walks are held by the Society's 60 chapters in late September and early October. At the Light the Night walks, walkers carry illuminated balloons -- white for survivors and red for supporters.

Weekly's Got You Covered!

In the September 24 issue of Soap Opera Weekly, on sale September 16, you get cover stories on Y&R's Michael and Christine (where Lauralee Bell and Christian LeBlanc explain how the unlikely duo got so cozy), and GL fans have spoken, and they definitely don't want Danny and Cassie together. Weekly's in-depth cover story examines the controversy, and talks to head writer Millee Taggart about why Danny's and Cassie's lives are intersecting. Plus, DOOL fans get full coverage on why Philip is on the short end of the stick this week when Chloe dumps him after finding out about his duplicity with regard to Brady. Kyle Lowder, Nadia Bjorlin and Jay Kenneth Johnson (Brady, Chloe and Philip) sound off on their characters' predicament.

Elsewhere in the issue, Dueling Divas Linda Susman and Carolyn Hinsey ask are the soaps ignoring the older generation? P.K Waddle asks why don't soaps go outside anymore? Just like you, the soaps' wardrobe departments have to do periodic housecleaning to make sure what's in their closets isn't too out there for the times. Read about how some soaps decide what goes and what stays.

In Primetime coverage, Weekly talks Emmy. Primetime Emmy, that is. The 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be Sept. 22 on NBC. Weekly's editors watched nominees' reels, and have opinions on who should, and who will, go home with Emmy. Will it be Six Feet Under or 24? Can The West Wing's Martin Sheen finally take home a trophy for playing President Bartlet? Read Weekly's picks.

Plus, get your first preview of The WB's new drama Everwood; find out what former Party of Five star will hit 7th Heaven this fall; and, as always, get the latest Nielsen ratings, story recaps and previews, read our event and TV listings so you know where to find your favorite stars, and see what daytime's best and brightest wore out on the town.
