Dear Suds Buds:
As usual there is lots going on this week. But before we get into that, get this: I had the remarkable pleasure to sit in on an acting class presented by General Hospital's Jaclyn Zeman (Bobbie), held at the Learning Annex in Los Angeles last Thursday. Turtle-Run, in conjunction with the Learning Annex, a continuing education company with installations in major cities in the US and Canada, offered a five-dollar discount off the registration to interested fans. Most of the people who attended, however, were serious actors, looking for some insight into how to break into acting on a soap, and Zeman was chock full of helpful tips and strategies. She also shared interesting behind-the-scenes info on life on the set of General Hospital! Stay tuned to Turtle-Run's Top of the Week next week when I share more about the evening with you. And now, on with the soaps!
AMC Fan to WebMistress for AMC Star
"Got a dream?" asks E. J. Weiss, "Do it!" she says. Weiss, otherwise known as SEAHAAS to her growing online contingent, recently made a dream come true for herself when she teamed with All My Children's Marj Dusay to create and develop Dusay's website, www.marjdusay.com
Weiss, a former Florida rock & roll disc jockey and AMC fan from way back, created an online domain of .wav files of all the All My Children characters in 1997. The site has built quite a library ("I think I have close to a gigabyte of .wav files," said Weiss) and quite a following with over 7 million hits to date.
Recently relaunching as www.seahaas.com, Weiss' site consists of rock & roll and other tv-related .wav pages, along with the sections dedicated to All My Children. She has taken up animation, and sprinkles the pages with fun, whacky "photo cartoons" of AMC stars. In fact, if you click on the "About the Turtle," link to the left of this very page, you will even see an animation she created for www.Turtle-Run.com's famous "Bob, the Purple Turtle!" Thanks again, E.J.! ;o)
But how did she come to be webmistress to AMC's Marj Dusay (Vanessa)?
"We met in a dark, smoky (not to mention cheesy) nightclub in New York City," recalls Weiss. "Not a big place. In fact, when the cab pulled up I looked at this small storefront and thought it was a cigar shop!" Weiss and Dusay were both there to see Dusay's AMC co-worker, Walt Willey (Jackson) do his famed bawdy stand-up comedy routine.
"After the show, a mutual friend who works for a soap magazine introduced us," said Weiss. "We (Marj, her sister, and me) talked awhile about vintage TV and some of her former roles and it was then that I asked her if she had ever considered doing live voice chats on her website. She said 'When? How? Where? Yes! Let's do it!'"
Dusay had someone take down Weiss' contact info and some months later Weiss got in touch with Marj and along with Marj's sister Kathy, opened Marj's chatroom and message boards. They began doing live voice chats with her fans. "After some months of getting to know each other we found our sense of humor to be quite similar," reflects Weiss. "I began showing her creative ideas and it was then that she decided to encompass her entire home on the web into one big amusement park for her fans to frolic in."
Working with Dusay has been a fun experience for Weiss. "Can't beat around the bush with Marj," she says. "I head straight to the center of the topic, get going and then get it done." Marj appreciates that, as she is a busy, working actor and not one for idle chitchat. According to Weiss, Dusay is not that fond of the phone, but knows it's also her lifeline. "She always picks up, or gets right back to me when I leave a message that needs her attention." Weiss feels that the two have a mutual respect for each other, and mutual respect for each other's talents.
But is Dusay at all like the character of Vanessa? "No, actually, I am more like Vanessa," joked Weiss. "I'm spoiled, lazy and pampered and have the world brought to me on a silver platter. Marj is charitable, caring and self-reliant. She is busy, busy, busy and always running. But she does have good taste in clothes and can afford to shop in the same stores as Vanessa, which I can't."
From her early cyber beginnings creating .wav files for fans of AMC to use in the now defunct ABC AMC chat room on AOL, to her SEA Domain, and now webmistress to the villainous Vanessa, Weiss has come a long way. In fact, Dusay's website and Weiss were recently spotlighted in Soap Opera Digest, and both sites are winners of the 2001-2002 Golden Web Award given by the "International Association of Web Masters & Designers," in recognition of creativity, integrity and excellence on the Web.
"Well, it certainly has been an interesting trip into cyberspace," admits Weiss. "I may never come back down!" Weiss, who likes things that take shape from the mind to the hand, would rather live by a dream than live by a lie. "So I make things happen for me," she said. As for everyone else, her advice is right on. "Got a dream? Do it!"
Guiding Light Loses Laura Bell Bundy
Laura Bell Bundy will be leaving the role of Marah Lewis. Her last airdate is Monday, October 29, 2001.
In a statement, Laura says: "There is a divine force pulling me in a new direction. I had a two-year contract. That two years is up, and it is the right time to continue discovering what life has in store for me. I am excited about the journey ahead; however, the hardest part is leaving my Guiding Light family. They are the most wonderful group of people, and I have gained so much from them - especially their love. Guiding Light has been one of the greatest experiences of my life - I have learned so much as an actress, and as a person. I want to thank the fans for their love and support over the last few years. There would not be a Guiding Light without you. I will leave you with a quote from a song by my best friend, Amber Rhodes: 'The winds of change sometimes bring pain, but we should not question why--Cause the darkest times can be a blessing in disguise.' Peace and Love to you all."
Lindsey McKeon will assume the role. Her first airdate is Tuesday, November 6, 2001.
