Daytime Emmys, soap channels, and share your thoughts

Greetings from New York. Daytime Emmy excitement is mounting. Be sure to read this week's Soap Suds Cover Story called "Stars Shine on the Daytime Emmy Creative Craft Achievement Awards.

It was mentioned last Top of the Week that ABC/Disney plans to launch an all-soap cable channel, and what a boost of credibility that will lend to the entire industry. On May 6, 1999, Daily Variety reported that Columbia TriStar TV Group likewise has plans to launch a cable network devoted to soap operas and is rushing to get it on the air by January, 2000.

According to Variety writers, John Dempsey and Josef Adalian, sources say the Columbia TriStar TV Group channel will be called SoapCity and has plans to fill it's prime-time schedule with same-day repeats of NBC's Days of Our Lives. In addition, it will try to get instant-repeat rights to the three soaps that are included in a Columbia TriStar TV Group partnership with Proctor & Gamble for international distribution. Those shows include Guiding Light and As the World Turns, both on CBS, and NBC's recently canceled Another World. In addition, they are also hoping to get instant-repeat rights to The Young and the Restless which Columbia TriStar TV Group currently produces for CBS.

ABC/Disney has not yet named it's soap channel, but it is also hoping to launch in January with a prime-time lineup of repeats of that afternoon's Port Charles, All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital. Original programming will comprise more of the schedule.

Not one all-soaps-all-the-time cable channel, but two! Soap viewers will never again have to complain about network news departments pre-empting their shows.

Can this be?

Is AMC attempting to pair Gillian and Jake? Gillian and Ryan were so adorable in their angst. Even if Jake tries to win Gillian's heart, I predict she might be tempted, and may even dally with him on the rebound, but she and Ryan will ultimately reunite.
