There I was the industrious little bee, making phone calls, typing up and faxing requests, all in an effort to set up interviews for my latest feature assignment for Soap Opera Weekly. An article we were tentatively calling "Birth of a Spin Off" focusing on Jennifer Love Hewitt in her new show "The Time of Your Life."
Well, guess what soap fans? It appears that Ms. Hewitt is above doing a story with a soap magazine. She has decided that she does not want her show to be affiliated with soaps.
Hello? Excuse me? Is anyone at home inside your 20-year old brain, Love, babe? Heres a hot news flash. What do you think your show is? Its a prime-time soap. Just like "Party of Five," the show that spawned it. And "Felicity," "Dawsons Creek," and "Beverly Hills 90210" Truth is, most of our current prime time dramas are continuing sagas. How often do we hear "previously on NYPD Blue?" Or, "previously on E.R?" For Hewitt to deliberately snub a publication that reaches millions of readers is an incredibly poor business decision. Before "her" show even hits the airwaves, she displays an elitist attitude? On the basis of what? Her producer credit? Simply having the title "producer" does not mean she knows how to produce. Based on her response to our request, she is far too inexperienced and shortsighted to recognize what any true producer would know: a new show, running on one of the "weblets," LAs term for baby network, needs all the help it can get to attract viewers. A show that hired ex-soap actor, Diego Serrano, as her costar. A show that was plagued with problems from the get-go. (The pilot had to be completely reworked. "Its usually not a good sign," said TV Guide in the September 11, 1999 issue, page 26, "when producers toss out an entire pilot and start over") A show whose weight is completely on Hewitt's shoulders as an actor. Does she really think she is that wonderful?
Mimi Torchin, Editor-in-Chief of Soap Opera Weekly was shocked and angered after learning of Ms. Hewitts attitude toward her publication, and called me to discuss it. Torchins editorial in Weekly's October 12, 1999 issue (Vol. 10, Issue 41, on sale the week of October 4, 1999) expressed her sentiments clearly. Needless to say, dont expect much coverage of "The Time of Your Life" in Weekly. Thanks to Ms. Hewitts snobbery, the editors have decided not to go out of their way to promote the show.
Moving right along
