Meet your GH favorites at the Bistro, GH Fan Weekend, & more

Hi Suds Buds!

I am giggling to myself.  Every week I write the headlines for this column, and every week I add the "...and more!" phrase.  There's a great reason for that. We have so much breaking news, info, stories, candid comments from stars, etc., to share with you, there is no way I can fit that all into the headlines.  So, please scroll and read to the bottom of this column every week. It promises to be jam packed with all the latest news and views.

One other thing. A film/tv composer occupies the office next to Turtle-Run.  Right now, he has his door open and some pretty raunchy rock and roll is finding its way into our office. Talk about rocking out!  Ah yes. It's great to be alive.  But!  Enough babbly babble from me (she said as she bobbed her head and tapped her feet, ready to dance on the desk!)  Let's get to it for this week!

Soap Opera Bistro Hosts the Stars

West coast ABC soap fans are in for a treat.  Every Friday in August stars from "Port Charles" and "General Hospital" will spend the day at Disneyland's California Adventure in the ABC Soap Opera Bistro!  Come join them as they take a break from the daily passion and intrigue of their TV roles and come out to Disneyland just to meet you!

Every Friday, August 3 through August 24, four different stars will greet guests, sign autographs and mingle with diners and visitors in the soap opera-themed restaurant.  In addition to their appearances at the Bistro, each star will participate in two 90-minute autograph sessions, scheduled between 11 am and 7 pm.  At 4:30 each Friday, the stars of the day will appear in a 30-minute Q&A session on the stage of the Hyperion Theatre, near the ABC Soap Opera Bistro.

"ABC Soap Opera Bistro was created to bring the ABC soap fans closer to their favorite dramas," shared Angela Shapiro, president, ABC Daytime. "'Star Studded Fridays' is the first in many events that will allow our fans the chance to mingle with their favorite stars while experiencing all the fun and excitement of Disney's California Adventure."

Cynthia Harriss, President of the Disneyland Resort, was equally enthusiastic.  "We know that many of our guests are great fans of 'General Hospital' and 'Port Charles,'" she said. "And we are always happy to be able to offer them something special.  I can't think of a better setting for fans to meet their favorite stars than in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot area of Disney's California Adventure at the ABC Soap Opera Bistro."

The ABC Soap Opera Bistro Restaurant is themed to the settings and ambiance of popular ABC daytime dramas.  Servers pose as aspiring actors, and individual dining rooms in the Bistro are replicas of such daytime locales as Kelly's Diner, Luke's and the Nurses station from "General Hospital," the docks from "Port Charles," the Llanview Country Club terrace and the Buchanan stables from "One Life to Live," and the Chandler Mansion from "All My Children."  Wouldn't it just be plain fun to have lunch at Adam's place?

Located next to the original Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA, Disney's California Adventure is an all-new celebration of the excitement, lifestyle, culture and history of the Golden State.  Themed lands in the new park include the Golden State, highlighted by its Grizzly River Run and Soarin Over California airborn simulation; Paradise Pier with its California Screaming roller coaster and giant Sun Wheel, and Hollywood Pictures Backlot featuring Disney Animation, Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3-D, and the ABC Soap Opera Bistro.

For the line up of which GH and PC stars will be appearing, see "Seeing Stars" below, and stick with Turtle-Run next week when we share with you what happened at the first event on Friday, August 3, 2001.

Passions Casts New Character

Christopher Douglas will join the cast of NBC's hit daytime drama "Passions" in the contract role of Brian, it was announced, Tuesday, August 1, 2001.

"Brian is a character who is abruptly thrust into the lives of the citizens of Harmony," said "Passions" creator and head writer, James E. Reilly.  "We won't know much about him at first, but we will immediately see his impact on the lives of four of our characters, and the consequences will be major."

Christopher Douglas' previous credits include roles on the daytime dramas "Young and the Restless" and "One Live to Live."  He has also appeared in the telefilms "Shadow Warriors" for TNT and "The Pick Up" for Showtime.  Douglas has also made guest appearances on "Burke'sLaw," "Honor and Duty," "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" and "Married with Children."  Additionally, Douglas has modeled for fashion designers Gianni Versace and Giorgio Armani, appeared in ads for OldSpice and the National Dairy Board, and has been selected as one of YM Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful Guys."  He also appeared in Tori Amos' video, Cornflake Girl.

Just how will the character of Brian effect the status quo in Harmony?  What four Harmony lives will his arrival impact the most? We will just have to tune in to find out!

Douglas begins taping his scenes on August 20, 2001. His first airdate is scheduled for September 24, 2001.

General Hospital Fan Weekend, 2001 -- Sportsmen's Lodge

By Jessica Radloff

Dedicated and extremely appreciative is the only way to describe the cast of ABC's "General Hospital" and "Port Charles." The weekend of July 27, 28 and 29 marked the show's annual fan club events and everyone in attendance at Studio City's Sportsmen's Lodge seemed to be genuinely enthusiastic and pleased. With approximately 12 events scheduled, Turtle-Run was on hand to witness some of the festivities and join in the fun!

Really Real

Real Andrews' (Taggert) event Saturday afternoon proved to be a dream come true for many of the fans in attendance.  Real was joined by Chad Brannon (Zander), Coltin Scott (Nikolas), Lynne Moody (Florence), John J. York (Mac) and Marisa Ramirez (Gia) for an insightful Q&A, and a more interesting look into the personalities of these talented actors that bring their characters to life day in and day out.

Benefiting the Real Andrews Foundation that supports physically handicapped and ill children, Real began his event by showing a short ten minute video illustrating the foundation and letting people know how they can make a difference.  In his ongoing efforts to support the foundation, Real embarked on an iron-man competition to benefit a close friend of his.  After the video concluded, attendees were able to see the real Real (no pun intended). Yes, he is built and gorgeous, but he definitely is not one to walk around showing off his macho body and acting indifferent to the world.  He is a compassionate, loving and emotional man who displayed he was not embarrassed by the tears running down his face after seeing kids with cancer benefiting from the foundation.  Although the point of the event was to entertain the fans with spoilers and questions revolving around the show, the fans were genuinely impressed and proud to have such an admirable person in their presence.

Real was beyond gracious.  However, there was one request he was unable to accommodate: signing autographs.  But hold on--it's not for the reason you think! Real's wife is about to give birth and time was of the essence!  "I have to keep my times as much as I can so I can get through the whole weekend. Come up tomorrow (for the fan luncheon) right away and I'll be happy to sign everything and take pictures. . all that cool kinda stuff!" Real noted.

The most pressing question on the minds of the fans had to have been whether or not Taggert will soon get a love interest.  Quite the jokester, Real responded "you know, Sonny's starting to look real good to me!  Taggert's about ready to take anything!  Chad's (Zander) looking good (too)!  Hey, I don't know . . . I'm ready!"

Speaking of Chad, one enthusiastic fan offered to donate $200 to Real's charity if Chad would sing a song!  After a little prodding, Chad broke into a deep voiced version of "Mary had a little lamb" before asking the fans to give him a few moments to think over his song selections.  But before Chad could break out in verse, Coltin Scott entered the room and sent many hearts aflutter!  Getting a tad serious when asked about his storyline, Coltin replied, "to be absolutely honest, I think everybody would agree that right now, Nikolas is probably the only one who is getting decent material."  With that, the crowd applauded in definite agreement.  "I mean, it's the truth.  I'm pretty happy with the storyline, but I'd really like to get away from being the prince.  I don't know the last time I've been the prince and now all of the sudden it's a big thing!  I'd rather just be the king and get it over with!" Coltin joked.

When asked the status of Mac and Felicia's relationship, John J. York broke into a long explanation of the way things are currently going in his storyline.  "Christina (Felicia) is on a long vacation break right now.  (As far as storyline), there are a lot of unhappy people, including myself, with the way Mac was without a spine.  I don't know what to say.  As actors, we are presented with a play.  It's our job to do the play the way they want it.  All I can say is that we do the best we can with what we're given. At times it's not what the audience roots for, and at times it's not what we want personally, but hopefully, my responsibility lies in doing it their way."  Although fans had hoped York would have some fantastic news regarding his current storyline, he noted "when you keep making excuses for Felicia's behavior, that's not much of a man, ya know?  And there will be a couple more scenes coming up like that, so be ready for it," he warned.

Just as Marisa Ramirez (Gia) made her entrance to a thrilled group of fans, this reporter was off to the next event:  a private, surprise party for Wally Kurth (Ned)!  Read on!

Happy Birthday Wally!

After getting off to a later-than-planned start, coordinators for Wally Kurth's and GH's fan club weekend planned a special, press-only surprise party for Kurth before his scheduled Kurth and Taylor concert later that evening.  However, what was assumed to be a real "surprise" featuring co-stars, turned out to be a few planned moments with Kurth (no co-stars included) being photographed next to his Kurth &Taylor-inspired cake.  After singing "Happy Birthday" and giving a few hugs and kisses to those in charge, Kurth returned to his suite to prepare for the night's concert.  Although Kurth was gracious and genuinely appreciative of the effort, the "surprise" seemed rather strained, and not up to the caliber that I expected. However...

Kurth & Taylor Wowwed the Fans

Shortly after Kurth disappeared into the hotel to rehearse and fine tune with his band members, fans began pouring in to the outside garden by the pool in hopes of grabbing the very best seats.  This is where Turtle-Run caught up with Timothy Frens of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Frens, a GH fan of over 30 years, declared himself Kurth and Taylor's biggest fan! "I go all over. . . wherever they are, I'm always there.  I go to the front row and I just rock with them.  I've become friends with them.  They are a wonderful group of gentlemen," Frens said.  This was particularly evident when Kurth and his bandmates made subtle references to Frens at the concert.  Frens encourages Turtle-Run fans to see the group if they're ever in the area.

Frens comment that they "are wonderful" seemed to be the consensus of the entire audience.  Wendy Heaton and Kerri Norman of Hot Springs, Arkansas, both said that the concert was a blast.  "We came last year and he was awesome and he was awesome this year, too," Wendy said. The two friends have watched GH for 15 years, although this was only their second time attending the fan club weekend.  "They have a great cast and just being able to be with them at all their events!  They are so personable and energetic.  It just makes you want to be around them even more," they said.

Following the concert, which, by the way, raised almost $2000 in ticket sales benefiting the Kurth & Taylor foundation (a nonprofit organization that aids children's charities), Kurth orchestrated an informal Q&A session featuring past and present GH stars.  Among those in attendance: Tava Smiley (Chloe), Lisa Vultaggio (Hannah), Billy Warlock (AJ), and a cell phone--uh, rather Nancy Lee Grahn via cell phone!

First up, Wally wanted to give Tava the opportunity to say some parting words to the audience upon her upcoming departure from the show. Caught off guard by the impromptu speech-making, Tava offered that she was going to "live everyday and be bright and shiny and (live by) whatever the day brings."  Lisa Vultaggio, a former cast member who knows what those days are like, informed the fans as to what she has been doing since leaving Port Charles. "I was offered a feature film that (will shoot next year).  I've been offered two other scripts and am possibly going to be a spokesmodel for a new perfume.   And I'm doing a music video. But besides all that, I'm doing ministry work as well," she said.

Although he's not leaving GH, another cast member will soon be busy working on outside projects.  Billy Warlock delighted the audience with news that he is returning to "Baywatch" for a special episode that will air during November sweeps.  "The Baywatch clan is back. . the old-timers.  But no Speedo's--we're actually going to thongs," he cracked.

Warlock had the crowd in stitches again when he began taking punches at the current Cassadine story.  "Can we talk about the Cassadines?!  How stupid, huh?!"  Kurth shot in, "Do you have a hard time believing that someone is frozen?"  Warlock replied, "You know, there was a time when I was really embarrassed to do 'Baywatch,' but I can't wait to go back. . . that's freaking Shakespeare to this!"  As Vultaggio started singing "Tell it like it is!," Smiley shouted back by telling Warlock that "you're talking to a girl who had a brain tumor, was blind and had psychic dreams!" Coming to his soap opera senses, Warlock conceded, "alright, that was really stupid too, but Stavros?  I'm not into Stavros!"

As funny as the conversation was to the fans, it also confirmed for them that they aren't crazy for thinking some of the latest storylines are a bit contrived.  Often times, the powers that be try to pass a storyline off as groundbreaking or shocking to cover up for the poor writing and direction a plotline is being taken. That leaves many fans wondering if they really should be offering such harsh criticism.  But having the actors espouse the same thoughts actually made the audience care more.  That way, they know that when a storyline isn't working, the actor is usually doing the best he/she can, all the while hoping it will wrap up as quickly as the fans are back home.

On another note, fans were excited when Kurth announced that Nancy Lee Grahn would be available to answer questions through his cell phone. Although initially promising Kurth that she would attend the event, a last minute attempt to find a babysitter fell through and the doting mom had to stay home.  "Her daughter is cuddled up with her in bed," Kurth told the audience, who proceeded to let out a collective, "awww."  However, Grahn actually spent more time talking to Billy Warlock than the fans.  She wanted to congratulate him on some outstanding performances from last week and by the time they were done talking, Warlock accidentally turned the cell phone off.  But it seemed okay with the fans, who got to see first hand how close and friendly the cast is with each other.

Thank goodness for that.  It is specifically that kind of camaraderie and support that will take General Hospital, and its fans, through the next thirty plus years!

Tell TRO Your GH Fan Weekend Tale!

There were a number of other events scheduled, including those hosted by Rebecca Herbst and Coltin Scott to name a few. Of course, there was the piece de resistance -- the main event itself -- the fan lunch. In a gutsy move, One Life to Live is set to bring back the character of Allison Perkins, the woman who kidnapped Jessica when she was an infant.  When we next meet Allison she is now at St. Ann's where she will soon encounter Viki. The question is, just how will the two react to each other? Reprising the role of Allison Perkins is Barbara Garrick, who currently stars on Broadway in "A Thousand Clowns."  Garrick's first airdate is Wednesday, August 15, 2001.
