Hi Suds Buds!
Guess what? TRO has two new computers. Beautiful, shinny Apples. I share this because the capital investment will assist our efforts in keeping TRO running smoothly! Famous last words, as our server was down for a while today. Hope that didn't cause much of an inconvenience. Our ISP got us back up rather quickly, I am happy to say. Thanks, Guys!
Lots to talk about this week. Angela Shapiro, president of ABC Daytime, announced today that Julie Hanan Carruthers was named executive producer of Port Charles, effective immediately. She replaces Wendy Riche, who has served as executive producer since the show began in 1997. Riche co-created Port Charles, and is executive producer of General Hospital (as I am sure you already know!) She will remain a consultant to Port Charles, but her focus will be on General Hospital.
"We are very proud to have Julie Hanan Carruthers, who has been with Port Charles from the beginning, take on the role of executive producer," Wendy Riche said. "In a business that is changing daily, General Hospital and Port Charles need and deserve 150% full-time attention from their executive producer. It was always my intention to get Port Charles up and running and now that it is, I am fortunate to hand it over to the person who has been closest to me and to the show from the beginning. It is with great promise that I pass the baton of executive producer to Julie, whose creative talent, production skills, exemplary leadership abilities and vision will catapult Port Charles boldly into the new millennium."
Last week, Angela Shapiro named Meghan McTavish new head writer at One Life To Live. Ms. McTavish seems to be making the rounds, head writer wise. Any network, any show, odds are, McTavish has head written it! LOL.
From behind the scenes to in front of the camera. All My Children is dropping veteran actors like flies. First Tom Michaels, then Michael Nader. Now, James Kiberd. The rest of the cast must be quivering in their Cole Hahns. Except for Kelly Ripa, who just signed a new contract. Not that contracts mean anything at ABC, as they are not honoring them full term. I don't know the details on why Robin Strasser has decided to leave One Life To Live, but the way things are going at ABC lately, it's hard not to wonder. The out clause has become very useful to the network and its parent company. Where's the sanity clause? (Do you believe in Sanity Clause?)
TRO congratulates James Kiberd for his magnanimous spirit and support of All My Children, even as he is being shown the door. His letter in this week's Soap Opera Weekly is gutsy, direct, and heartfelt. "I support their (ABC Executives) efforts to save this endangered art form," Kiberd says. "So watch the show without Trevor. How will they write him off? Watch the show. Will they kill him off? Watch the show! If these shows, these cultural icons of this half of the century are to survive, they need your eyeballs. Watch the show! There are some fine actors on AMC backed by a team valiantly fighting for the show, and most importantly, Agnes (Nixon) is writing again! Watch her! Watch her write her way through this one! As Trevor would say, 'This will be a kick in the keister - a real doozy.' Watch the show!" Kiberd closes by thanking the fans for watching Trevor. "Thank you all -- keep watching!" For the entire letter, get Soap Opera Weekly, on sale now!
I will miss the character of Trevor. All the best, Uncle Porkchop. The good news is, we can still visit with James Kiberd at his website: http://www.jameskiberd.com
TRO continues to get mail on the Michael Nader firing. Rumors have surfaced regarding a possible role on Y&R and/or a return to PV. Sorry to report, they are only rumors. Nader's agents say there has been no official communication from either show as of this writing. We may not be seeing Michael on daytime TV in the very near future, but SEAHAAS reminds me that we can visit him on the Internet Movie Database (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Nader,+Michael). From his list of credits, Nader was quite the beach blanket party boy back in his early career! Feel like a dose of a wild and crazy, hot, young, fun, sexy Michael Nader? Try one of his early films: Beach Party, Muscle Beach Party, Pajama Party, Bikini Beach, Beach Blanket Bingo, Ski Party, Gidget... The list goes on. For a Nader Party Marathon, rent a beach blanket bunch, and have some beach blanket popcorn on me.
A few weeks ago, Mattel announced the launch of "Marlena," the second in it's series of diva dolls. Well, Erica and Marlena mooooooove over. Here's Mimi! Drew Carey's own Mega Diva. She not a doll yet, although there are some who might consider her a living doll, then there's Drew, who compares her to the clown at Jack-in-the-Box! Which is why I had to share this photo with you. It's from this week's Drew Carey Show, titled: "Steve and Mimi Get Married," and airs 9 PM, Wednesday, Dec 1st. Check your local listings.
Last and certainly least is TRO's commentary on the Barbara Walters Special "The Ten Most Fascinating People of 1999." Here's what ABC says about the program: "'Barbara Walters Presents the 10 Most Fascinating People of 1999,' is an hour-long ABC News Special highlighting some of the year's most prominent names in entertainment, politics, sports, and business. It airs Tuesday, November 30th at 10 PM ET. Monica Lewinsky first met with Ms. Walters last February to discuss the relationship that shocked the world and changed her life forever. Now, Ms. Walters revisits with Ms. Lewinsky to see how she is progressing and dealing with the events of last year."
Here's what I say: Why is Monica Lewinsky included in this list? Mothra says she can think of a million people who are more fascinating than Monica Lewinsky. We all can, no doubt. I am sure Ms. Lewinsky is a nice, young woman. She just used questionable judgment in her private affairs with a public official. This makes her one of the ten most fascinating people of 1999? Not in my book. I don't care what she is up to now. Do you? I wish her well. Have nothing against her, but let sleeping dogs lie. Well, some of them may have lied to begin with, which is what blew (no pun intended) this story way out of proportion in the first place! IMHO, it is time to move on. Although I may have been interested in seeing the other nine fascinating people of 1999, who include Susan Lucci and Ricky Martin, I don't plan on tuning in to this special, because the Monica Lewinsky update is a turn off.
