Dear Suds Buds,
With all the breaking news and events that we have covered of late, there has been no room in this column for "Letters to the Editor!" If you have written and have not gotten a response either here, or by return email, it's not that I haven't read your letter. I read every letter received, and will answer a few this week. (See below.)
Tons of ABC Daytime news ahead, so enjoy!
Louise Sorel Is Back!
For two years in a row you have voted Louise Sorel the "Most Missed Missing Veteran" in the Turtle-Run Annual Cybby Awards! Well, guess what! Your prayers have been answered, at least in the near term. Louise Sorel returns to daytime this summer! Switching networks, she has taken on the recurring role of Judge Campobello for ABC's "All My Children."
In a recent conversation with Sorel she commented on how strange it has been since leaving "Days of our Lives," where she played Vivian for eight years, to not have someplace to go to work every day. Aside from a short-term role as Donatella on "Port Charles," extensive traveling, and gearing up to do a play this summer, Sorel still felt that she has too much time on her hands. Well not for long! It seems that Adam (David Canary) is in for some potential legal troubles in the coming months, and will encounter Judge Campobello. "I just love New York," said Sorel in our recent phone conversation, excited about the prospect of spending some time there.
Although Sorel starred for eight years on "Days of our Lives" here in LA for NBC, heading to New York for "All My Children" is almost like going home. Prior to her work on "Days," she appeared in 1986-1987 as Judith Russell on "One Life to Live," which also tapes in New York.
Sorel is also looking forward to the opportunity to share scenes with 5-time Emmy winner, David Canary (Adam). "I am very happy to be working with an actor of his quality and caring," she said.
Stay tuned to Turtle-Run for our exclusive interview with the venerable veteran as she thanks you personally for her second Cybby win in a row! Her first airdate as Judge Campobello on "All My Children" is Wednesday, July 25, 2001.
Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) Receives NAHI Award
It's no secret that Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) suffers from pi-polar disorder (manic-depression). He has even lobbied the producers at "General Hospital" to create a storyline that would enable him to play a character with this disease. For his courage, leadership and service, Benard is being presented the National Alliance for the Mentally ill (NAHI) Lionel Aldridge Award.
"Mental illnesses are biological brain disorders," said NAMI Executive Director Richard Birkel, Ph.D. "Treatment works, but only if a person gets it. Too often, the stigma associated with mental illness discourages people from getting help when they need it most. That's why the U.S. Surgeon General has called on the entertainment industry to help eliminate the stigma."
Benard is one of the first Hollywood and Hispanic celebrities to talk publicly about his experience with bi-polar disorder (manic-depression). The award honors the memory of Lionel Aldridge, former defensive end of the Green Bay Packers, who struggled for years with schizophrenia.
Other celebrities receiving awards include Sally Field, Carrie Fisher, Samuel L. Jackson, as well as the television's "ER," and the Universal Focus feature film, "The Caveman's Valentine," where Samuel L. Jackson plays a homeless man with schizophrenia who lives in a cave but solves a murder.
"Television and movies shape public perceptions of mental illness," said Birkel. "They have tremendous power to do good or do harm to those who struggle to overcome mental illness in real life."
Congratulations to Maurice Benard and all the other recipients of the NAHI Awards.
ABC's 9th Annual Day of Compassion
ABC Daytime will commemorate he ninth annual "Day of Compassion" on Thursday, June 21, 2001 on it's entire drama lineup. "Day of Compassion," an annual media event devoted to AIDS/HIV awareness, began in 1993 when actor Neil Tadken watched an AIDS-themed episode of "One Life to Live" and was inspired by its honest communication of the AIDS crisis. This year, for the first time, ABC Daytime has partnered with E-Bay and will auction off select costumes from this year's Nurses Ball! A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
On "All My Children" watch for Stuart's (David Canary) touching speech at his art gallery fundraiser. On "One Life to Live" Reverend Carpenter salutes Kelly's article on the AIDS crisis. And on "General Hospital" and "Port Charles," the Nurses Ball gets underway rife with tragedy, mishap and merriment, as the denizens of Port Charles ban together to spread the message of AIDS awareness. As usual, expect some fun performances. On "General Hospital" watch for Nikolas (Coltin Scott), Lucky (Jacob Young), and Gia's (Marisa Ramirez) "Up on the Roof;" Luke (Anthony Geary) and Felicia's (Kristina Wagner) upbeat "Old Time Rock and Roll," and when the nurses are called away to the Emergency Room, Mac (John J. York), Edward (John Ingle), AJ (Billy Warlock),Taggert (Real Andrews), and Roy (A Martinez) fill in singing the "Shoop Shoop Song." On "Port Charles" you'll be entertained by Gabriela (Ion Overman)'s sexy rendition of "Let Me Entertain You," Livvie (Kelly Monaco), Alison (Erin Hershey), Jamal (Kiko Elsworth), and Victor (Nicholas Pryor) in a fun-filled presentation of "Love Potion Number 9."
For more on "Day of Compassion" storylines, visit TRO's Sneak Peeks for the week of June 18, 2001 (June 18, 2001 Sneak Peeks are online until Thursday, June 21, 2001.)
BBMak on AMC
Hollywood recording artists (and my personal favorite of all the boy-groups), BBMak make a special guest appearance on AMC, airing the week of July 13, 2001. In the story, BBMak (Christian Burns, Mark Barry, and Stephen McNally) will perform in SOS (Sounds of Salsa), Mateo's nightclub. Band member Burns has scenes with Mateo (Mark Consuelos) prior to the other band members arriving in Pine Valley. Watch for a shocking twist in the scene that also stars Leo (Josh Duhamel) and Bianca (Eden Riegel.)
BBMak returned to the US to open for N*SYNC on their upcoming North American tour which kicked off in Jacksonville, FL on May 23, 2001. The British trio has enjoyed tremendous success since the release of their debut disc, "Sooner or Later," last May. Fueled by the success of hit singles "Back Here," "Still On Your Side," and "Ghost of You and Me," BBMak has played to sold out audiences around the world. The band has recently appeared on "Live with Regis and Kelly," "CNN Showbiz," "ABC's Summer Jams," and in an upcoming one-hour television special: "Music in High Places," airing in June on DirecTV and in September on MTV.

*Alex Mendoza made a formal statement regarding his departure from "Port Charles," in which he states: "I have enjoyed my stay in Port Charles, and I'm extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of this show. I walk away with fond memories and new friendships. It seems like the perfect time for me to bow gracefully and say thank you to the fans and the PC family. I was brought to the show to complete a storyline. That being done, my character will leave PC for an undetermined amount of time. Should they ever find the inspiration to write for this character again, I would welcome a return. In the meantime, this break will allow me to continue to work on other film and television projects. Once again, many thanks." Mendoza's last airdate was Tuesday, June 3, 2001.
*Richard Culliton has been named Headwriter, "All My Children," effective July 16, 2001. Culliton began his writing career fifteen years ago on the daytime drama "Texas." Since then, he began an established career with ABC Daytime writing for AMC in 1993, and later as the headwriter for GH, for which he received the Writers Guild Award. Culliton is also the co-creator of "Port Charles," along with his wife, Carolyn Culliton and Wendy Riche. "We are thrilled to have Richard join our team as headwriter," said Angela Shapiro, president, ABC Daytime. "His talents will undoubtedly further our long standing tradition in presenting compelling and socially relevant story telling."
*Clothing designer David Zyla has joined the behind-the-scenes team at Port Charles as Costume Designer. He joins Costume Designer Monique Adams. Prior to a career in theater, television and film, Zyla designed for an international fashion label, which received recognition for his spring collection. His most recent theater work was viewed in the 20th Anniversary production of Sweeney Todd, starring Kelsey Grammer, Christine Barinski, Neil Patrick Harris, and Melissa Manchester. Additional plays include Oliver!, Fiorello!, Clue: The Musical, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Triumph of Love. His film design credits include "Sara's Life Before it Became a Movie," "Nice Guys Sleep Alone," "Luck is No Lady," and "The War is Over." He is also noted for his contribution to former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's wardrobe for her sojourn to the Far East. Zyla is a graduate of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
Congratulations to Galen Gering (Luis, PAS)
Galen Gering has won a Latino Media Arts award for his portrayal of Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald on Passions. Congratulations!
Spyder Games to Air on MTV
MTV's "who done it" soap opera, "Spyder Games" premiers on Monday, June 18, 2001 at 7 PM ET/PT on MTV. Created by Christian McLaughlin and Valerie Ahern ("Clueless," "Married With Children") and Executive Produced by Sally Sussman Morina ("Days of our Lives," "Young & the Restless") the primetime soap promises to do for soaps what "Scream" did for horror movies.
Starring soap veterans, Shawn Batten and Christina Chambers, both from "Sunset Beach," Monday, June 18th marks the launch of 65 episodes of "Spyder Games." The soap will air Monday-Friday in the late afternoon and repeat in the late evening. Set in the fictional town of Fort Kent, "Spyder Games" centers on the Carlisle family, a dynasty which owns and operates Spyder Games, the video games corporation started by its patriarch, Boris Carlisle. Like the telenovelas of Latin America, the cycle will build to a shocking climax in week 13.
Video game business tycoons, the Carlisles, the richest family in Fort Kent, are: Dmitri (played by Joseph R. Cacia); Ivan (played by Byron Field); Natalia (played by Shawn Batten); and Sara (played by Robert Hutchinson). Other main characters include Taylor Jones (played by Christina Chambers); Daphne Wallace (played by Monica Garnich); Francisco Torres (played by Enrique Murciano); and, Cherish Pardee (played by Megalyn Echikunwoke).
The big news in Fort Kent is the wedding of Ivan Carlisle. How does Dmitri get the shock of his life? Why is Sasha hiding the identity of his girlfriend? Not to mention the fact that Cherish, who is a huge soap opera fan, knows that her personal crush on Sasha Carlisle will work out, as long as she keeps it secret from her strict, Carlisle-phobic police lieutenant father. Tune into MTV this week to find out all about "Spyder Games" from the beginning.
Letters to the Editor
"Who is Princess Greta's father?" Melissa
Ah yes! The age-old question. However, no one seems to know. It is our considered opinion here at Turtle-Run that the writers's are still working the answer out themselves! Perhaps NBC will do another cyber poll to have the fans determine the outcome? If any of you DOOL fans have your own theories on this topic, please post them on the Turtle Run DOOL message boards! We'd love to hear what you think.
"I have two questions I would like to ask. Is AMC ever going to let Bianca have a love interest? Is AMC every going to have a black female on their show who has a major part? I see that they have several black males but it seems that they are putting them with white females. I would love to another Jesse/Angie type storyline. It seems to me that ABC has a problem showing African-Americans in love. That none of their soaps has any African Americans couples who have a major storyline."Jackie
Your questions are very valid. Right now, it appears that Bianca has a "crush" on Laura, but it is unrequited. Whether they ever let her have a real love interest remains to be seen. You are not alone in wishing for another Jesse/Angie-type storyline. At least, we will be treated to a return of Jesse on a recurring basis this summer.
"I love Tony and Marah on Guiding Light. I have heard that the new writers at Guiding Light would break up Tony and Marah and bring on a new love interest for Tony. See if you can find out and let me know why they would do such a thing. Tony and Marah belong together. Please Guiding Light don't let Tony and Marah fans down. Please let them know how we feel. " Joy
Thanks for verbalizing what many GL fans are thinking! There is a lot of support for Tony and Marah as a couple. The producers will not reveal what exactly they have planned for them, but I have passed on your sentiments. As far as what will happen next, we will just have to tune in and see. I would recommend, however, that you do continue to voice your opinions and send snail mail to CBS TV. The address is listed below!
"I generally like your site, and read the sneak peeks faithfully, however the spin I found in the Days of Our Lives sneak peek (recently) was insulting. "Then, in a tender turn of events, Marlena does an about face and actually reaches out to Brady." Isn't it bad enough that the writers of Days are trying to turn Marlena into something she's not? That they are rewriting major history, such as suggesting Marlena was/is jealous of Isabella? All seemingly just to build up some stupid teen version of Brady? But to come to a synopsis sneak peek and read this garbage? Marlena has tried over and over to reach out to Brady! Why she does I don't know, I wouldn't after the way he treats her. Give me a break!" RW
Thank you so much for sharing your opinion on this. You have hit the nail on the head in a number of areas. This current story and the animosity between Marlena and Brady does reflect reinvention of past story. I suppose Marlena continues to reach out to Brady because of her love for John. Now, it appears that Brady is coming around, and Marlena is proud of this, as is evidenced by her conversation with John this week. I am not sure where the writing will lead this story, but I am interested to see it play out.
"Up until recently I truly enjoyed Passions but find I can no longer watch a soap that condones deceit and irresponsible behavior in the guise of love. For one teenage character to plan to seduce another to become pregnant and secure a relationship sets a very poor example for the teen viewers who are at such an impressionable age and are faithful followers of this show. Too often fiction becomes reality in the eyes of our youth and I would prefer to see this soap take the strong hard line of abstinence as they are with Charity and Miquel rather than the ludicrous allusions of Kay and Simone." Sunflower
Your comments are well taken. Dramatic writing is a mirror of life. It's not real life, but it mimics real life, borrowing from it to create a story. However, it does seem that the writers are showing both sides of this coin, evidenced by Miguel and Charity's decision to abstain, and Kay and Simone's "ludicrous allusions." Passions is not the first dramatic medium to portray irresponsible behavior in the guise of love. Nor will it be the last. The ultimate value will be exemplified in the "moral of the story." It may take some time for that to play out, but odds are, in storylines that contain "ludicrous allusions" that are then acted upon, the results cause serious repercussions. It ends up being a way to depict why NOT to act irresponsibly in real life, and opens the portal for impressionable youth to choose the high road in their own life experience.
"What happen to the former Carly on General Hospital? Did she not want to play that role because she felt she didn't want to be humiliated by playing the begging wife. What happened to the former actor (who played) Dimitri Marick (AMC). Was he fired because of the drug related situation that was on the news?" Sabrina
The former Carly on General Hospital, Sarah Brown, left the show to pursue other interests in the entertainment industry and to enroll herself in several of the other genres. It had nothing to do with feeling humiliated by the storyline. The actor who originated the role and formerly played AMC's Dimitri Marick, was temporarily replaced due to his drug dependency. However, he has been in rehab, and would be interested in returning to AMC when the time is right for the storyline. ABC has left the door open.
"We're are again struggling to bring Michael Nader back to Pine Valley. Today we heard that Anthony Addabbo is leaving this summer, as is "Alex." We're not sure if this is good or bad news. We're glad Anthony's going because we could never accept him as Dimitri. We're delighted that there's no news about killing Dimitri. Since Finola seems to be staying, one has to hope that Dimitri will return in his "true" form. Have you heard any word from his representative? Have you heard anything about ABC making any overtures to get him back? With his legal woes behind him and his probation requiring his maintaining his recovery, paired with the fact that both he and his fans want him back on AMC, one would think ABC would begin at least preliminary negotiations for his return, if they meant what they said. Do you think they did? Or were they merely appeasing his fans...temporarily? Anthony A's first scene was prefaced by the comment that he was temporarily taking over the role during Michael Nader's absence. Do you think there's some reason for them to balk on their very public statement?" Carol
As evidenced by the above two letters, Turtle-Run continues to be inundated with email in regard to Michael Nader and the role of Dimitri on "All My Children." In a phone conversation with Nader's agent, Arthur Toretzky on Thursday, June 14, 2001, both Nader and Toretzky remain optimistic. "We made it clear that he is interested in coming back," shared Toretzky. "And they are standing by their previous statement, that when it's right for the story, they would be more than happy to speak with him."
And on "Sex in the City..."
Airing this week is episode #52 titled, "What's Sex Got to Do with It," where our four heroines must determine what comes first? The chicken or the sex? When the sexual sparks fly, Carrie wonders whether great sex actually means anything. Meanwhile, Samantha begins to date someone she really likes, as Charolotte starts to explore some old territory. Then, in a surprising turn of events, Miranda makes a very conscious decision regarding her own sexual activities. What does she decide? Tune in to "Sex in the City" this week to find out!
Premiering on Sunday, June 24, 2001 is episode #53 titled, "Ghost Town," where Carrie and Miranda are invited to the opening of a bar that is co-owned by some old friends. Tune in to "Sex in the City" next Sunday to find out!

Behind the Scenes: MTV's "Spyder Games" The network soaps have always actively pursued the elusive, desirable teen viewer by including younger characters and, in the case of "Passions," a few highly unusual storylines. Starting on June 18th, MTV, the channel that seems to know a thing or two about the teen audience, is launching a daily soap centered around the video game industry. Go behind the scenes for an in-depth look at this new edition to the world of soaps. The "Spyder Games" team features veteran writers, directors and producers from soaps like "Bold & the Beautiful" and "Days of our Lives," and the cast features former "Sunset Beach" stars Christina Chambers and Shawn Batten. "We are taking all the great things we love about soaps and just kind of twisting it," explains head writer/executive producer Sally Sussman Morina. "It's got all the great ingredients, plus we've got some fresh faces on camera."
Weddings that Weren't Soap weddings are supposed to be a joyous experiences, but on soap operas, some of the most memorable ones have often been the most catastrophic. In keeping with SoapNet's month-long salute to ABC's "Unforgettable Weddings," "SoapCenter" looks at interrupted soap weddings on the ABC, NBC and CBS soaps. "There have been so many interrupted [weddings] on soaps now that the surprise is when it actually happens," says Special Contributor Mimi Torchin.
Joyce Becker's Soap Opera Festivals More than 20 years ago, former journalist Joyce Becker hatched the idea to deliver soap actors to their loyal fans via personal appearances at state fairs, amusement parks and shopping centers. Joyce was on to something, and her company, Soap Opera Festivals, is in its third decade of bringing actors and fans together. Go withJoyce on location in Green Bay, WI where she's accompanied by "Days of our Lives" stars Alison Sweeney and Austin Peck (Sami and Austin); "Young and the Restless'" Don Diamont (Brad) and "All My Children's" J. Eddie Peck (Jake). "I think it's really fun for the audience because then they get to see us in a way that they haven't seen us before. It's not just signing autographs and walking away. They get to know us and they get to ask us questions," says Sweeney.
Mimi Torchin and Y&R's Christin LeBlanc Special Contributor Mimi Torchin sits down in her living room for a lively conversation with Emmy-nominated Christian LeBLanc (Michael. Y&R). "Michael is the best-written character on the show because the writers have allowed him to have light and dark sides," LeBlanc explains. "And [they] have him do the right things at the wrong times and the wrong things at the right times. It's brilliant."
