PC gets superstitious, Dinner with a star, Make a Wish & more

Dear Suds Buds,

Much to share with you this week. Let's get right to it!

Port Charles Takes Another Walk on the Wild Side When "Superstition" Begins Airing On April 1, 2002

OnApril 1, 2002, ABC Daytime's "Port Charles" begins its seventh book, "Superstition," which continues to delve into the world of the supernatural and other unearthly phenomena. As the denizens of "Port Charles" mourn the sudden loss of a dear friend, one of the characters discovers some very old yet well preserved objects from the past that emanate extraordinary and unexplained powers. Both the tale behind their origins and the one that unfolds are packed with the scintillating drama, mystery, romance and suspense that have become the hallmark of each story arc.

Beginning Wednesday, March 27, ABC Daytime will launch a hot new on-air marketing campaign that will run the length of the book. Setting the perfect tone for the campaign is music by the popular reggae band UB40, singing their version of Stevie Wonder's classic, "Superstition."

For those of you who may not remember, on Monday, December 4, 2000, "Port Charles" embarked on the first in the series of thirteen-week story arcs. Each thirteen-week arc is titled as a "book." The first was titled "Fate." "Time in a Bottle" was the second book in the series, which debuted March 5, 2001, followed by "Tainted Love" on June 4, 2001, "Tempted" on September 3, 2001, a special four-week holiday story, "Miracles Happen," which premiered December 3, 2001, and most recently "Secrets" on January 2, 2002.

This faster-paced storytelling integrates the traditional Daytime drama with the highly successful telenovelas to bring viewers intrigue, excitement and surprises every day, every week, every month. "Port Charles" is up 8% season-to-date among women 18-49, 11% in women 18-34 and 15% in women 25-54, making it the only show in Daytime to show growth in all three key women demos season-to-date.

As you all know, "Port Charles" is a spin-off of the top-rated, award-winning drama "GeneralHospital," and features some of "GeneralHospital's" most beloved characters. It debuted on the ABC Television Network on June 1, 1997, as a two-hour, primetime special. "Port Charles" celebrated its 1000th episode on Friday, April 20, 2001. Core characters from each drama often appear on both shows.

Rent-Way Announces 2001 Soap Opera Sweepstakes Winner

Rent-Way Inc. (NYSE: RWY), headquartered in Erie, PA., today announced the national winner of its 2001 "Win Dinner With A Soap Star" Sweepstakes. Barbara Smith, a 30-year-old woman from Philadelphia, Pa., was chosen the winner by a random drawing.

As the winner of Rent-Way's "Win Dinner With A Soap Star" Sweepstakes, Smith traveled to New York City on March 22, 2002, for an all-expense-paid trip that spans three days and two nights. As part of the trip Smith will have dinner with J. Eddie Peck, (Jake, AMC).

The 2001 Rent-Way Soap Opera Sweepstakes generated more than 13,000 entries. Abby Burdick, an account executive for Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly, explained the phenomenal success of the sweepstakes. "Just to give you an idea of the success of this program, that (13,000) is almost double the number of entries from any other Soap Opera Digest sweepstakes in 2001," Burdick said.

Upon returning from New York City, Rent-Way Inc. will award Smith an RCA 52-inch projection TV. Rent-Way Regional Manager Roger Reynolds, and Store Manager Mario (Eddie) Pagan, will present Smith with the TV.

Soap Opera Digest will feature photographs taken from the New York City trip and the presentation of the projection TV in upcoming issues of Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly.

Smith exclaimed, "I wanted to go to New York and two weeks later I won the sweepstakes! I've never won anything before and can't wait for the trip! It will be so exciting to meet Eddie Peck in person. I'm also overwhelmed that Rent-Way is giving me a 52-inch color TV!"

"This promotion provided an excellent opportunity for Rent-Way to continue building name recognition as a leader in the rent-to-own industry," said Roger Zwingler, Rent-Way's Vice President, Marketing and Advertising. "We were also pleased to be able to give Barbara Smith the opportunity to enjoy a dinner with the soap opera star of her choice, J. Eddie Peck, from the show 'All My Children.'  We design these promotions with the goal of creating some excitement among our employees and top-of-mind awareness for customers. I think this sweepstakes did a fabulous job of doing both."

Rent-Way is the second-largest operator of rental-purchase stores in the United States. Rent-Way rents quality name-brand merchandise such as home entertainment equipment, computers, furniture and appliances from 1,073 stores in 42 states.

"The NBC Daytime stars really add a lot to this unique event and we are very happy to have them back," said CMA Executive Director Ed Benson. "The union of Fan Fair with NBC Daytime is a perfect fit for everyone," said CMA Senior Manager of Strategic Marketing Rick Murray. The team effort put forth by NBC Daytime has been seamless with Fan Fair event organizers and we are looking forward to more advance promotions and new elements to introduce on site at Fan Fair."
