Joan Collins' Exits Guiding Light on December 23, 2002
In a daytime shocker, Soapdom has learned that fan favorite Joan Collins (Alexandria, GL) will be leaving the soap.
"Joan Collins has asked to be released from her Guiding Light contract. It was a difficult decision for us to make because she has been such a wonderful Alexandria Spaulding," said Mary Alice Dwyer-Dobin, Executive in Charge of Production, Procter & Gamble Productions, Inc. "However, we completely understand that she has other obligations and we support her decision to focus on her other projects at this time. I'd like to thank Joan for the work she's done on the show, and we wish her the best of luck."
For Collins, choosing to walk away from Springfield was a difficult decision. "It was a fascinating challenge to work on Guiding Light with some truly wonderful actors and a great team," said Collins. "It is regretful that we weren't able to fit in my obligations stemming from the success of my two books, 'Star Quality,' and 'Joan's Way' (in the UK) and my future projects."
Soapdom can't help but speculate as to whether the grueling schedule of daytime was overly taxing on the veteran film and primetime actress. Like Dywer-Dobin, we will miss Collins as Alexandria and wish her the best on her future endeavors. The good news is, we can still get a frequent dose of Collins as she works her magic on "Dynasty," now airing on the SoapNet cable channel.
The role of Alexandria will be recast. Look for an announcement to be forthcoming shortly. Joan Collins last airdate as Alexandria is December 23, 2002.
