ABC Primetime Hosts Daytime
In the biggest synergistic marketing campaign ever between Primetime and Daytime, the ABC Television Network has launched "Primetime Hosts Daytime." Stars of ABC's new fall primetime season are being featured in hosted wraparound interstitials on ABC Daytime during All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital.

This is the first time the primetime and daytime areas of the network have created a synergistic marketing campaign of this magnitude. Talent from 11 primetime shows - dramas, comedies and reality - are appearing over a four-week period in thirty-second spots that run at the top of each of that day's daytime dramas. Each spot gives viewers a quick peek at the host's primetime series, along with a preview of that day's episode of the soaps.

Brian Frons, president, ABC Daytime, said: "This is a great bonus for our daytime fans to see their favorite primetime stars talking up their soaps, and also giving them a sneak peek at what's ahead for their evening viewing."

The campaign began September 13 with Mark Cuban of The Benefactor, and continues this week through October 8 with the stars of According to Jim, 8 Simple Rules, Rodney, Complete Savages, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, George Lopez life as we know it, Desperate Housewives, Less than Perfect, Wife Swap and The Bachelor appearing as part of "Primetime Hosts Daytime."  In addition, SOAPnet will play the interstitials during their primetime plays of the ABC soaps.

On Days of our Lives, Buzz hears that Matt Cedeno returns as Brandon Walker, but only for a few episodes. Just enough to create trouble in the already troublesome relationship of Sami (Alison Sweeney) and Lucas (Bryan Datillo). He will air in October.  For west coast viewers, Cedeno is most recently known as the Pollo Loco "el Caliente" guy.  "Taste the Fire!"  His pic is blasted all over the fast food chain and he airs in both TV and radio spots regionaly. Mark Wilows recently chatted with B&B's Joseph Mascolo (Massimo) and the question of a return to Days of our Lives naturally came up.  Here's the Buzz:

Wilows: Soapdom needs to know, is Stefano going to return to Days Of Our Lives?

Mascolo: “You soaps you never know. Brad Bell (Exec Producer of B&B) is aware of the aura of Stefano, but it is up to the powers that be,” Mascolo said. “I’m always open, and I think a guest appearance would be nice. I’m told that the storyline on Days still revolves around me. We’ll have to wait and see."  (According to Bell, he’d be open to the idea of a crossover, but said it’s hard to budge CBS). Last week we reported in Buzz that Mary Beth Evans (Sierra, ATWT) was on her way to Llanview in a recurring role.  Well, turns out that won't be happening. Could it be that ATWT is offering her a contract role after being on recurring so long as Sierra?  Or, is another soap interested? She's already appeared as Katherine, on General Hospital and as Kayla on Days of our Lives.  What could be next?  According to a published report from SID Online, ABC admits that Evans was in contention for the role on OLTL. "For a while there, it was true," SID Online quotes a network rep as stating.  But the Buzz is that Evans, instead of taking a recurring role on OLTL, is pondering a contract offer from another soap. What about the role Evans was to play on OLTL? Could be that OLTL is looking for another actress. Stay tuned. (Contributed by CG)

Huge Days Buzz.  Soapdom is on to a big surprise -- or maybe not such a surprise -- for Days of our Lives fans.  Stefano DiMeara fans beware. Will the Phoenix rise again?  Could be!  Looks like Stefano may be back!  Rumor has it that Joseph Mascolo is in talks to reprise his role as the evil Stefano, but only as a guest appearance. Mascolo currently stars as Massimo Marone on the Bold And Beautiful, and the powers that be, Brad Bell of B&B and Ken Corday of Days, may do a crossover and compromise. I Want my Baby Back Baby Back...

Good Day Live on Monday, August 2, 2004 went backstage at All My Children. They talked with Eden Riegel (Bianca) and Alexa Havins (Babe).  Havens hugged Riegel and said she had just taped giving the baby back! I'm assuming AMC is taping about a month ahead... so this would air in late August/early September.  But then, I thought about it.  It can't be that Babe gave the baby back to Bianca.... because Eden Riegel didn't know. LOL Since there's a scoop that says either Babe or Bianca will kidnap the baby... I'm thinking Babe does (since they're completely rehashing Adam/Dixie/Tad from 1989) and has to bring the baby back and give it back to JR. Anyway... this is just my guesswork. But it sounds good! Buzz at SOAPnet is that the cabler has laid out big bucks – to the tune of $9 mil – to get the exclusive cable “windows” to Spelling Productions, Beverly Hills 90201 and Melrose Place.  According to SOAPnet General Manager, Deborah Blackwell, the network picked up “off the net” rights for both shows for the next four years.

Daily Variety, the industry insider trade publication that broke this story late last week, reported that the deal includes the complete seven seasons of Melrose and ten seasons of 90210.  Variety noted that both shows will begin airing on SOAPNet’s Dysfunctional Family Saturday night.

But here’s the clincher.  Melrose had been airing on E! Entertainment TV and it’s offshoot Style network since 1996; and 90210 had been acquired by Fox’s FX network. Buzz is that neither placement drove many viewers.  But SOAPnet’s Blackwell believes that the primetime soaps will do better on SOAPnet, stating that of all the possible shows SOAPnet viewers could ask for, these two were the most requested. It made sense for the suds network to acquire them. (Contributed by LMS)
