Jay Kenneth Johnson (Philip, Days of our Lives)By now, we've all heard about the good, the bad, and the ugly coming out of Days of our Lives. The good? They've been picked up.  Official word still forthcoming.  The bad?  The pick up comes at a cost.  We've heard -- a 40%  budget cut.  Let's play that out in numbers. That means, say for example, they used to have $1,000,000 to produce an episode. Now, they only have $600,000. That's a huge chunk of lost bucks.  The ugly?  Actor's salaries are being cut, and one, so far, Jay Kenneth Johnson (Philip), has opted out of the pay cut, so he's out. Also out are Deidre Hall (Marlena) and Drake Hogestyn (John) as the show is giving their character's a "rest."  Find out more.   Meantime, the soap opera Examiner and long time Soapdom friend, Mary Montanari, has this take on the situation.  Gobble, Gobble to the Corday bird. ABC Daytime and SOAPnet head hauncho, Brian Frons, talks with Mel of Mel's Diner about the direction All My Children is heading with it's gay storyline.  He also discusses The View. In fact, the article is mostly about The View, but if you go to the third video on the page and read the paragraphs surrounding it, you'll get Frons' take on what's shaken at AMC right now.  "Brian Frons: Disney-ABC TV Daytime Chief Looks for ‘The View’ to Kill"   Contributed by LMS

Michael E. Knight (Tad, All My Children)Back to more All My Children Buzz, it is being reported that Rebecca Budig (Greenlee) will extend her stay on the soap through the Spring of 2009 to tie up loose ends with her storyline. Additionally, Tad fans can now rejoice.  Michael E. Knight, the long-time AMC vet and fan favorite has signed again on the dotted line to remain with the show.  However, we won't be seeing him at Super Soap Weekend this final year of that event.  He's been a mainstay at every Super Soap in the past, commanding long lines for autographs and staying long hours to make sure everyone got their pic with him, not to mention a few hugs and kisses.  Soapdom can't help but wonder if the reason he was not invited to Super Soap this year was due to iffy contract talks. Who knows. Now that the contract is signed, perhaps he'll be a suprise guest. Contributed by LMS

SOAPnet announces three original series to debut in 2009.  First up is "Greg Behrendt's Wake-Up Call," from Avalon Television. Who is Greg Behrendt?  For those who may have just returned from Mars, Behrendt has consulted for "Sex and the City," co-wrote the book "He's Just Not That Into You" and hosted his own daytime talk show This SOAPnet incarnation will have Behrendt addressing one couple's major issues each week and using practical and funny relationship expertise to give them the tools to fix their problems. The series will air at 11 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 8, kicking off SoapNet's six-week programming event "Sugar-Free Valentines." The second new series is called "Being Erica," but no, it's not about Erica Kane.  This Erica is 32-year-old Erica Strange (played by newcomer Erin Karpluk), a highly educated but underachieving single woman who can't understand why her life is heading nowhere. She gets help from a mysterious man named Dr. Tom (Michael Riley), who enables her to go back in time and relive an event. Tyron Leitso also stars.  The series, produced by Temple Street and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., has been picked up for 13 episodes and will premiere in the spring. Finally, sit back and get ready for SOAPnet's docusoap that's tentatively titled "Southern Belles," y'all.  This series follows the professional and romantic lives of five single Southern women in their 20s and 30s. "Belles," from Endemol USA and ABC Media Prods., is in production in Louisville, Ky., on 10 one-hour episodes for a 2009 premiere. Contributed by LMS
