Y&R's Diabetes Storyline Hits Home

Coinciding with National Diabetes Awareness month, The Young and the Restless once again looks at the disease through the eyes of it's diabetic character, Raul Guittierez (David Lago).

"The first time we approached the subject, it was all about the importance of controlling your blood sugar," says Y&R co-head writer and co-executive producer Jack Smith. "Now we're approaching it from the effects of stress on a diabetic... and with the issues that Raul and Brittany are dealing with (Brittany's stripping career), it's driving Raul a little bit nuts."

Smith has a personal connection to the storyline. "I'm a diabetic," he shares. He stresses the importance of maintaining blood sugar through diet and exercise and monitoring blood sugar levels for consistency. "It takes 15 seconds to test your blood sugar, it's very quick and easy," Smith declares. "Diabetes can be relatively easy to live with if you take control."

Mark Pinter Heads to Guiding Light as Brad Green

As reported in Soapdom Casting, Soap veteran Mark Pinter will assume the role of Spaulding executive Brad Greene on Guiding Light beginning Dec. 12.

"I never thought I'd be asked to come back to daytime," Pinter gushes, "so when somebody calls and asks if you're interested in something, it's nice."

It's a homecoming for Pinter, who played the evil Mark Evans on the show from 1981-1983. "Robert Newman (Josh) didn't know I was coming back," Pinter chuckles, adding, "He walked up to me and said, 'I looked at the monitor and thought they were showing old reruns.'"

Michael Swan's Song (outgoing Brad Green)

Pinter assumes the role from Michael Swan, who is exiting the cast. "The workload did not materialize," explains Swan, who resides on the West Coast. He was grateful, though, for the brief opportunity to reconnect with several faces from his P&G past.

"Interns who worked with me on As the World Turns (where Swan played Duncan McKechnie) have now become producers on GL, and it was great to work with them, Kim [Zimmer (Reva)] and all the people I've worked with in the past," says Swan. He is currently shooting several films.
