Happy Anniversary to CBS' flagship soap opera

Jeanne Cooper (Kay, The Young and the Restless)The Young and the Restless turns 34 in March.  As if you didn't know, this continuing CBS soap opera, which takes place in the Midwestern town of Genoa City, revolves around the loves, enmities, hopes and fears of its residents -- to say the least, right?

When The Young and the Restless premiered on March 26, 1973, it revolutionized the daytime drama genre with its emphasis on storylines geared to younger audiences. Along with it being directed to the youth market, Y&R incorporated frank sensuality, sleek production values, and the use of rock and popular music from the getgo.  The soap has also been acclaimed for its serious, in-depth treatment of timely social issues and concerns, not to mention being the first to market on a number of topical and controversial storylines.  Remember when Jeanne Cooper (Katherine "Kay" Cancellor) underwent the first face lift on daytime TV?  Cameras followed Cooper into the operating room as Kay Chancellor was nipped and tucked before our very eyes.

Created by the late William Bell and his wife, Lee Phillip Bell, The Young and the Restless has held the number one position in daytime drama ratings for more than 18 astounding years. The streak began in December 1988.

Soapdom congratulates The Young and the Restless on reaching this milestone. Here's to the next 34 years.

Past Blast

Former Days of our Lives stars in a band and are really rock'in

Chandler Massey (ex-Will) and Casey Deidrick (ex-Chad) of Days of our Lives are two rock' in dudes. The formers suds stars have been working non-stop since leaving the show on recording a song for people living with cystic fibrosis, and they recently released a video doing a cover of Miley Cyrus's number one hit "Wrecking Ball," which I may add is a must see.
