According to entertainment industry trade publication, Daily Variety, in a landmark multiyear deal, SOAPNet has pacted with Sony Pictures Television for same-day repurposing rights to NBC's top-rated "Days of Our Lives." The agreement marks the first time the Disney-owned cable network has won the right to air an existing daytime drama not produced by sister network  ABC.

Both SOAPnet and Sony are thrilled with this deal, purported to be in the 7 figures per year range.  Landing Days will transform SOAPnet, according to the cable network’s general manager, Deborah Blackwell.

Days will begin airing on SOAPnet on March 15, 2003 weeknights at 7 PM.  The show will be the lead in to the regular ABC line-up of soaps.  Sony won the rights to “repurpose Days” some time ago and has been delivering same day downloads of Days commercial free from its SoapCity website.  The pact with SOAPnet is another of their repurposing strategies.  According to Sony Pictures Television president, Steve Mosko, who himself has the charm and handsome good looks of a soap star, SOAPnet was the perfect match because “what SOAPNet provides is a really phenomenal platform for soaps.  They are cheerleaders for daytime serials, and that’s appealing. It can only help grow the brand.”

Days of our Lives couldn’t be more delighted with this development.  “We are thrilled that there is now yet another option to find us on the air somewhere,” said the spokesperson for the show.  “Hopefully this will also not only bring lapsed viewers back, but it will also provide an opportunity for new viewers to find us.”

The spokesperson also noted that the SOAPnet broadcasting of Days should in no way detract from the downloads currently accessible at SoapCity.  “The ultimate goal is that they help each other,” she said.

Could this mean the end of the VCR for Days fans?  Like, why bother, right? You can either download that day’s episode from SoapCity for a paltry fee, or tune in to SOAPNet at 7 PM each weeknight to catch another airing!
