Davies moves on, Ingle stays put

Davies Looks to the Past for His Future

As previously reported, after weeks of print and Internet buzz, ABC Daytime has confirmed that Lane Davies is leaving the Port Charles canvas. In a brief official statement, the network announced, "The storyline of Cameron Lewis will end in the coming weeks and as a result, Lane Davies will be leaving the cast of General Hospital. We, the cast and crew, are most grateful for Lane's contributions to the daytime drama and wish him much success with his future."
Best known for his role as urbane cowboy Mason Capwell on Santa Barbara, Davies joined the cast in Nov. 2002, as a straight-laced psychiatrist, and was eventually revealed to be the father of troubled teen Zander Smith. SB enthusiasts immediately started praying that Davies' arrival on the P.C. scene would prompt a romantic rematch of sorts with his former SB leading lady, Nancy Grahn, who now portrays Alexis. As the nuptially-challenged Mason and Julia, the duo used to have this wry Tracy/Hepburn thing going, but somehow GH never picked up on the possibilities. Instead, Davies will most likely be off the credits sometime next month.
In a holiday message to his fans, Davies posted this greeting on his official Web site, acknowledge their recent "outpouring of support" -- and protest -- over his GH departure. "I have no words for the warmth I feel from all of you," he wrote. "The reasons for Cameron's departure from the show are complex, and I will share my feelings about them in a later post or chat. For now, I just want to say 'Thank you.'"

Davies, who garnered four Soap Opera Digest Award nominations during his Santa Barbara heyday, got his daytime start playing Evan Whyland on Days of our Lives. In 1993, he temporarily subbed for Ronn Moss as Ridge Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful.

His first post-GH venture will be The Mason Chronicles, "a chronological video journey through the first few years of Mason Capwell's life on Santa Barbara." It will be released exclusively on L-D.com., and Davies plans to time the launch to coincide with his departure from GH.

In other GH news...

As Soapdom reported last week, General Hospital has rescinded its release of John Ingle, who plays patriarch Edward Quartermaine.

A mere two weeks before the 2003 holiday season, GH informed Ingle that his contract with the show would not be renewed after the holidays, and Edward would be off the GH canvas. Sources speculated that the character would perish in GH's upcoming towering inferno storyline. But the producers have had a change of heart, and Ingle, who has been on GH for a decade, is again a part of the family fold.

"Whenever a story line is created for one of our characters, the script and the show's canvas constantly evolve. As such, the role of Edward Quartermaine — so perfectly portrayed by consummate gentleman John Ingle — will continue on the daytime drama into the foreseeable future," GH shares through an official statement. "The cast and crew are thrilled John will remain with General Hospital."
