Chad Brannon, John Ingle, Kin Shriner and More on the Way Out!
There are reports surfacing that Fan favorite Chad Brannon (Zander Smith) will exit the show when his contract expires early next year.
According to show sources, Brannon has wanted to explore opportunities outside daytime in addition to his General Hospital gig. The terms of his contract, it is said, prohibited him from doing this.
Brannon joined the cast of General Hospital in July 2000 in what was originally scheduled to be a six-week recurring role. The actor, however, quickly impressed fans and network execs - but despite his front burner status he was without a long-term contract with the show until May 2001.
His work on General Hospital earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Younger Actor earlier this year.
A final airdate for Brannon has not yet been determined. It is also unclear if the role of Zander will be recast. An ABC spokesperson commented “Chad Brannon has decided to leave the cast of ‘General Hospital’ and in the coming months, the storyline of Zander Smith will be written accordingly. The entire cast and crew appreciate all his hard and dedicated work over the past 3 years and wish him all the best for his future… both personally and professionally.”
The GH spokesperson also confirmed that John Ingle (Edward Quartermaine) has been cut from the cast. Unlike Ingle's on-screen wife Lee, who was given the optimistic promise that she might be asked to return on a recurring basis as her character is needed, Ingle has not been given any indication that he will ever return to the show in the future.
Instead, there are setside rumblings that the character might be killed off.
Ingle, the third actor to portray Edward, joined the cast of General Hospital in 1993. The show spokesperson shared this statement with Soapdom. “Always the consummate gentleman, John Ingle brings a distinguished style to the role of patriarch Edward Quartermaine. However, his storyline will soon develop in a way that takes him off the canvas of ‘General Hospital,’ and as a result, John will be leaving the show in the near future. The cast and crew appreciate all of his hard work over the years and wish him much success with his future plans.”
A final airdate for Ingle has not yet been announced.
And General Hospital isn't finished with the firings, as word comes that long-time veteran, Kin Shriner (Scott Baldwin) has also been let go. The actor, whose contract was set to expire in early 2004, believed that he was going to renegotiate the terms of his contract with the network.
As it turns out, there was reportedly no interest on the networks' part in hammering out a new contract. A final airdate has not yet been determined for the actor. The ABC spokesperson commented on the reports of Shriner's dismissal: “Kin Shriner has been an integral member of the ‘General Hospital’ cast for over 25 years and his work has been exemplary. However, the storyline of Scott Baldwin will soon move in a direction that will take him away from Port Charles for the foreseeable future. With the door always open for Kin and his character to return to the series, we wish him all the best with his career and all his upcoming endeavors.”
Soapdom has also learned that Lane Davies (Cameron) and quite possibly others in the Quartermaine clan, could likewise be next on the chopping block. Not exactly the best Christmas gift GH can give the actors or their fans.
