Directors Guild Nominations Announced

Jill Mittwell (Director, OLTL) DGADirecting for a soap opera is both creative and technical. Directors spend about a week with a script -- if they're lucky and get it that far in advance -- and mark up each and every page with stage directions and ideas for capturing the best shots on tape. Before taping, they conduct a production meeting to  discuss each and every aspect of the script and their vision for directing it.

Directing for a daytime drama is a very seasoned and specific skill. As you will see below, all of the directors mentioned have been nominated multiple times before. Several are already winners.

The nominees for the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Daytime Serials for 2010 are (in alphabetical order):

LARRY CARPENTER
One Life to Live (ABC), "Episode #10,687"

This is Carpenter's seventh DGA Award nomination and all for his direction of One Life to Live. He won the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Daytime Serials Award for One Life to Live - "Episode #9947" in 2007, for "Episode #8849" in 2003, and for "So You Think You Can Be Shane Morasco's Father" in 2008. He was previously nominated for that series for "Episode #9686" in 2006, "Episode #9385" in 2005 and "Episode #8655" in 2002.

* Associate Directors: Tracy Casper Lang, Teresa Anne Cicala, Anthony J. Wilkinson, Jen Pepperman
* Stage Managers: Alan Needleman, Keith Greer

SALLY McDONALD
The Young and the Restless (CBS), "Episode #9553"

This is McDonald's fourth DGA Award nomination and all for her direction of The Young and the Restless. She was previously nominated in this category for her The Young and the Restless "Episode # 6437" in 1998, "Episode # 7784" in 2003, and the episode "Six Minutes and Counting" in 2009.

This is Mitwell's eighth DGA Award nomination and all for her direction of One Life to Live. She won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Daytime Serials for One Life to Live "Episode #9779" in 2006, "Episode #8295" in 2000 and "Episode #6356" in 1993. She was nominated for One Life to Live "Episode #8691" in 2002, "Episode #8012" in 1999, "Episode #7761" in 1998, and "Episode #7285" in 1996.

OWEN RENFROE
General Hospital (ABC), "Francophrenia"

This is Renfroe's third DGA Award nomination and all for his direction of General Hospital. He won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Daytime Serials for General Hospital "Episode # 10914" in 2005; and was nominated for his episode "Catch Me If You Can" in 2008.

MICHAEL STICH
The Bold and the Beautiful (CBS),"A Reason to Live " Part 1"

This is Stich's eighth nomination and all for his direction of The Bold and the Beautiful. He won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Daytime Serials for The Bold and the Beautiful "Episode # 1103" in 1991 and "Episode # 1884" in 1994; and was nominated in this category in for "Episode # 1693" in 1993, "Episode # 2393" in 1996, "Episode # 3532" in 2001, "Episode # 3948" in 2002 and "Episode # 4623" in 2005.

Stich's Directorial Team:
* Associate Directors: Steven A. Wacker, Clyde Kaplan, Catherine Sedwick, Jennifer L. Howard
* Stage Managers: Laura Yale, Douglas Hayden, Lisa Winther-Huston, Barbara Roche, John P. Aguirre
* Production Associate: Lori Staffier

The nominations were announced by Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford and winners will be will be announced at the 63rd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.
