AMC makes daytime history with Bianca and Lena

Eden Riegel (Bianca, AMC)Eden Riegel (Bianca) and Olga Sosnovska (Lena) to Appear on The View on Monday, April 21, 2003

Will Discuss Their Upcoming Same-Sex Kiss on AMC set to air Wednesday, April 23

ABC Daytime's Emmy Award-winning drama "All My Children," nominated for 17 Daytime Emmy Awards, will make television history with the first on-screen same sex kiss in Daytime television, it was announced today by Brian Frons, president, ABC Daytime.  (This is such major news for the network, it even made the 11 PM Eyewitness News in LA!)

This groundbreaking daytime television scene will take place on Wednesday, April 23, 2003.

"The theme of 'All My Children' from the beginning is the belief that, as God's children, we are all bound to each other by our common humanity despite our many personal differences; that it is our failure to understand and respect those differences that causes most of life's pain and suffering... The Bianca story is our latest effort to dramatize that belief," says the show's creator Agnes Nixon.

Since coming out in October 2000 as an openly gay teenager, Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel), the youngest daughter of Erica Kane (Susan Lucci), has faced many trials and tribulations in her quest for love. When Bianca met Lena (Olga Sosnovska), questions arose regarding Lena's sexual orientation. As Bianca's feelings continued to grow, so did Lena's, even though Lena initially had ulterior motives. In a moment of truth and true love, Lena will come to terms with her feelings, giving Bianca her first on-screen kiss.

Riegel herself is straight, but as coincindence would have it, her sister is a lesbian.

"All My Children" has consistently distinguished itself in the field of Daytime drama. The show has historically been committed to social issues, focusing on such topics as AIDS, abortion, teenage alcoholism, racial bias, acquaintance rape, spousal abuse, homosexuality, Reyes syndrome, Vietnam MIAs, drug abuse, the risks of motherhood over 40, safe sex, pet therapy and organ donations, among others.

"All My Children" celebrated its 33rd anniversary in January, 2003. The program has successfully maintained its popularity and continues to be one of Daytime's most compelling dramas. "All My Children" took home the 1998 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, the third time the show received this top honor, having also garnered the award in 1994 and 1992. The show also received its third consecutive Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series Writing. "All My Children" received its second Writers Guild Award and its second GLAAD Media Award in 2002 and third GLAAD Media Award nomination for 2003.

Created by Agnes Nixon, "All My Children" premiered on the ABC Television Network on January 5, 1970, as a half-hour show; seven years later it expanded to an hour. Jean Dadario Burke is executive producer, Gordon Rayfield and Anna Cascio are co-head writers, with Conal O'Brien and Angela Tessinari directing. "All My Children" is produced in New York and airs MONDAY-FRIDAY (1:00-2:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.
