Below you will find a recent interview conducted with 'The Bay' creator Gregori J. Martin. 'The Bay is an innovative new web series starring Mary Beth Evans, Tristan Rogers, Lilly Melgar, Lane Davies, and many other of your favorite soap stars. Please join us on Facebook and let us know what you think about his unique vision for the wonderful new show!

Were you a soap fan when you were growing up?

I certainly was! I think if anyone is going to produce or create a soap you have to be a soap fan. Otherwise you won’t know what you’re doing!

Do you have any stories or characters you remember as being your favorites?

I have favorites on all the shows. The ones that stand out to me most are Max and Gabrielle, Tina & Cord OLTL, Cruz & Eden, Kelly & Joe SB, Jenny & Greg AMC, Patch & Kayla DAYS, Jake, Vicky & Ryan, Lila, Josie & Gary, AW, Karen, Jagger, Brenda, Sonny, Lily, Stone GH, Holden & Lily ATWT, Jonathan & Reva GL.

Why do you think soaps are struggling so much in the ratings these days?

Well, a lot of it has to do with not utilizing the budgets they're given appropriately. And the execs should pay closer attention to the soap fans. They've been around for decades and in many cases some have been around longer than the current execs. The powers that be of these shows should look at daytime and see what it is the viewers want instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. It's also harder to do that now with new media like the Internet because, unfortunately, attention spans have decreased.

When and how did the idea for The Bay come about?

Growing up in a home filled with females, soaps were always playing on the tube. From my mother, to my babysitter, to my sisters, and cousins. and everyone watched a different show. It was impossible not to tune in. So my little kid brain invented this character named Sara Garrett who was basically my dream girl. Little by little I started to build a series of characters around her and now here we are, twenty something years later.

You have an amazing cast already on board and you haven’t even filmed the first episode yet. How did you manage to snag such well-known talent for this project?

I've worked in daytime before, and I'm also a film director and I've cast many of them in several of my projects. The daytime world is a fairly small community within. When you know one, you know everyone. It's like the plague. In a good way!

In general, what is your vision for ‘The Bay’?

I want to bring back the quality of the soap world in a fairly new media! I want to entice the older viewers again and attract new viewers, simultaneously. I want to do what GH did in the early 80s!

What kinds of stories can fans expect? Is this going to be good old-fashioned storytelling or poisonous gas and brain microchips?

It's going to be a little bit of both! Some of my favorite stories go from Eden Capwell being thrown in a pool of sharks and rescued by her love Cruz Castillo on SB, to the strength of the Quartermaine family on GH and the Cory family on AW, to Megan Gordan's dramatic death on OLTL. There are so many places I can take this show. But I want to give the audience what they want!

Is there any chance the episodes could extend beyond 6-8 minutes or that the show could be picked up for television?

Well, there's always that chance. I'm still unsure at this point if THE BAY may be better online or on television. I often hear the Internet is the television of the future. As far as longer episodes go, that too is a strong possibility. It will depend on the response and of course, technology.

You obviously already have the talent in place with your cast and crew. Beyond that, what is the most critical thing you need right now for ‘The Bay’ to succeed and how can the fans help you?

Sponsorship! We need the fans to show support, spread the word. The more popular we are the more companies will want to sponsor us. We'll take sponsorship from any legit company out there who wants to promote themselves, but it's all about the numbers. The more viewers we have the more chances companies will want to jump on board and sponsor us, the longer I can give the fans what they want!

Finally, do you have any message you want to send t the members of the newly minted ‘The Bay’ Official Fan Club?

Thank you so much for your support! I'm humbled by it. Please be as vocal as you can. My job is to satisfy you and I will do everything I can do to bring you the soap you've all been longing for!

Days of our Lives' Bill and Susan Hayes reflect and look forward to the 50th

For Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Doug and Julie) of Days of our Lives, the upcoming 50th anniversary of the show means many fond and special moments along with memories, and a walk that takes them down memory lane.

When you hear the names Bill and Susan, or their characters Doug and Julie, the first thing that pops into one's mind is "Television Royalty." They are icons and not to mention that back in 1976 they were so hot that both of them made the cover of Time Magazine. The first time daytime actors ever to appear on the cover.
