GL star reveals all on how to get and keep her gorgeous look

GL's Crystal Chappell (Olivia)When it comes to beauty, who better than "Guiding Light’s" dazzling Crystal Chappell (Olivia) to fill in the details? This gorgeous, funny, extremely down to earth actress was willing to share everything with us, from her favorite makeup and beauty products to the most useful of beauty tips.

"I don’t really wear makeup when I’m not working, or going to a function," Crystal says. "I’ll wear lipstick or Maybelline lip gloss. When I have to wear makeup, I generally go for MAC lipsticks, I like Retro…it’s a great color. I also use Maybelline mascara and Revlon concealer," says Chappell.

"I use Rusk shampoo, but I don’t always go for expensive brands. Sometimes I just pick up a big bottle of whatever’s cheap at Cosco! What I do spend money on are facial cleansing products. Skin care is so important. Other than that, I’m pretty low maintenance."

Of course, Chappell learned not to color her own hair. She leaves that to the professionals. "I’ve had too many disasters coloring it myself," she laughs. "I’m just really not very good at it. The color never comes out right. So, I have a colorist who puts some blond highlights in every six to eight weeks."

Speaking of hair color, Chappell's been blessed with a few different natural shades over the years, and has tried a few other changes thanks to over-the-counter products and her hairdresser knowing for sure. "I was born with black hair," she said. "I was blond by the time I was five, and red by the age of 16. I guess I have some funky hair gene. At 19, I dyed my hair blond. Then, I went through a dark phase where I made it black -- to the point it was almost blue! And then I went red, but reds are very difficult to maintain, so I stopped doing that, and now I’m dark with blond highlights."

Chappell is not into devoting too much effort to maintain her great "look," and is just as frazzled as we are when she has to pull together an ensemble herself. "I don’t really like spending a lot of time doing my hair and makeup," she admits. "I like when the hairstylists and makeup people at work do it. When my hair is styled, my makeup is flawless, and they put me in a great dress and gorgeous pumps, (then) I feel really good. But I panic if I have to pull something out of my own closet!"

It’s hard to believe that this gorgeous woman could panic about anything, and virtually impossible to believe that there was ever a time when she was anything but gorgeous. But according to Chappell, her youth was spent looking, well, awkward.

"I was born with crossed eyes, and growing up I was a little overweight. I had a speech impediment, and buckteeth! And there was that time that I shaved off my eyebrows," she laughs, although it wasn’t funny then. "It seemed easier than tweezing," she continues. "Then, I had two operations on my eyes. By the time I was in junior high school, my eyes were mostly straight, but sometimes they’d wander. Needless to say, I got teased a lot. Some people wouldn’t even look at me." It was a lesson well learned for Chappell in the way she treats others. "I have a tendency to look past the physical," she said, "and just get right to the soul of the person.

GL's Crystal Chappell (Olivia)You’d think after being the girl she described, Chappell would walk around thinking, ‘Ha, look at me now!’ But she doesn’t. "When I look in the mirror," she says, "I still see that cross-eyed, bucktoothed, chubby kid, who shaved her eyebrows off. I still have eyebrow problems, today. I’m happy if I can get them straight," she laughs.

If forced to choose a person whom she finds physically beautiful, Chappell says she’d have to go with Michelle Pfeiffer. "She’s a beautiful woman, and I respect her work. If we’re talking about men, I’d have to say Mel Gibson. I think he’s really handsome and sexy, but I think it really has more to do with the fact that he has a kind of crazy personality. To me, that’s appealing. And if we’re not talking about movie stars, I’d have to go with Michael (Sabatino, her husband and veteran soap actor). Not a day goes by that I don’t find myself staring at him, and I won’t tell you what I’m staring at!"

At the end of the day, the ugly duckling turned striking beauty is at peace with herself and her life. "I do feel good about myself," Chappell continues. "But it’s not because I look good, it’s because I’ve given myself a good life and I’m happy."
