While attending the Celebrities 4 Charity event held in Las Vegas the last weekend in February 2005, I had the chance to sit down with Bobbie Eakes, (Krystal, AMC) and Kassie dePaiva (Blair, OLTL).  These women both hail from the south, both work on ABC soaps, and they also share a love for singing.  Both have just released CDs and the lucky fans who attended the Las Vegas event got to hear Eakes and dePaiva up close and personal.  The CD’s are called Something Beautiful by Bobbie Eakes, available at www.bobbieeakes.com and No Regrets by Kassie DePaiva which is available at www.kassiedepaiva.com

Soapdom:  So guys, first things first!  What’s going on in your storylines right now.  Kassie, is Blair out of the trunk?

Kassie DePaiva:  Not quite.  I am out of the trunk but people think that I am dead.

Soapdom:  Did you go to the junk yard?

Kassie:  Yeah, but I do escape. I guess everyone in Llanview thinks that I’m dead! And then in a couple of days, I’ll be found on the side of the road.  A heroin addict finds me and then I’m met with Asa Buchanan which is probably worse than the trash yard.

Soapdom:  And Bobbie, Krystal is now the sad grandma.

Bobbie Eakes:  Yeah! (sad sigh)  I’m going to jail.  I’m going to the big house.  So, that will be fun.  We’ve already started taping it.

Soapdom: So they ARE putting you in jail.

Bobbie: Yeah.  I am taking the wrap for everybody.

Kassie:  That makes you the heroine.

Bobbie: Hopefully, I guess.  I make a deal that Babe and Dave would go free and take the maximum sentence.  I don’t know what’s going to happen.

Kassie:  You’ll look good in the orange.

Bobbie:  You know about those orange jumpsuits -- I don’t know if orange is my color.

Soapdom:  Bobbie, does Krystal get to sing on All My Children? Like when Kassie got to sing on Valentines Day?

Kassie:  Their episode, I caught it, it was right before ours, her rendition of Funny Valentine.  She just has the greatest voice.

Soapdom:  I am so excited today.  I will actually get to hear both of your perform live tonight.  And the great thing is that you will both be able to perform songs from your latest CDs. Kassie, is it written in your contract that you get to sing a certain amount of times on One Life to Live?

Kassie:  Two times.  Two times a year.  It’s a flexible contract, but so far, it’s two times.

Soapdom:  So there was Blair’s New Year’s appeal to Todd and the Valentine’s Day song.  Are these songs that are on your current CD?

Kassie:  I have performed three of the songs from the CD on the show so far and I’ll be redoing “Sweet Angel of Mine” on Mother’s day.

Soapdom:  So ladies, please tell us where you are from and about your passion for music.

Bobbie: I’m from Warner Robbins, Georgia.  I just always remember singing.  My dad played a lot of music in the house just to get all five of us girls up and dressed and going to school, he’d blast music.  And we all started singing together, the five sisters.  It was a hobby at first and it sort of became semi-professional and then I just took it further.

Soapdom: You took it the ‘country route?’

Bobbie:  Well, just kind of a mixed bag.  Yeah, it’s a little country.  I listened to Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn, but my dad also played a lot of pop music.  My first band was a country band, my first professional gig when I was 16.  But, I’ve done a lot of other kinds of music; you know, pop and rock.

Soapdom:  Tell us about the new CD.

Bobbie:  The new CD is a little bit on the jazz side.  Some people have said (it’s similar to) Diana Krall, Norah Jones.  It’s a lot of standards and some of my favorite songs from the fifties and sixties and seventies.

Soapdom: How about you, Kassie?

Kassie: Well, I grew up in Morganville, Kentucky.  We always just sang with 45 records.  You know, we just sing them over and over again until you learned them with artists like Donny Osmond.  But I guess as I grew up, my great appreciation for singing came from listening to the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews.  And that probably was the greatest inspiration, not just a little thing.  I thought that I would always grow out of it.  But then, little Kassie was up there singing in church and I never ever considered it as a career until maybe when I was in my teens. I thought, well, I would sing at a wedding and they paid me.

Bobbie and Kassie laughed at the thought of ‘getting paid’ to sing.

Kassie:  And I was very active in my speech and debate team in Jr. High and High School and I think they worked hand in hand.  At my piano recital I sang and at my dance recital I sang, so that tells you how well I played the piano and I danced.  So I thought, maybe I should stick to singing.

Soapdom:  And your CD?

Kassie: This is my second CD.  My first CD was a collection of songs that I always loved called ‘Naked’ and it’s because it’s emotionally naked music.  But this new CD is pretty much straight ahead country songs that I recorded in Nashville, TN written by Nashville writers.  I’ve had the blessing of being able to use this music through my character of Blair on One Life, so it’s good.
