It used to be that the hotter the party, the bigger the crowd kept out to linger behind the velvet rope. Nowadays, a social event is only as exclusive as the swag doled out to its attendees. The world of daytime is a kinder place and more often than not, its actors and actresses participate with gusto in the name of charity alone. Still, it doesn’t hurt to throw some perks their way for all their time and effort, which happened to be the case for those who lent a hand to Martha Byrne (Lily, ATWT) when she hosted the 11th Annual Daytime Television Salutes St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital benefit on October 14th in New York City. Thanks to Stephanie Jo Klein, founder and president of Klein Creative Communications, Michael Park (Jack, ATWT), Drake Hogestyn (John, DOOL), and Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie, GH) walked away with a goody bag worth almost $1,500!
The actors toted out their “thank you(s)” in a smokin’ Vy and Elle bag (they had the choice of either a backpack or overnight) and included Croton Watch Company’s Trizone watches; Dooley’s Original Toffee & Vodka liqueur set; Kept Couture bubble bath; Jenny Craig VIP passes; Keurig gourmet home brewing system, plus a three-month gift card for coffee; and much more!
“This is the second year we worked with Martha for St. Jude,” tells Klein to Soapdom from her offices in Brooklyn. “Our goal was family-friendly fun. Martha had the final say in everything that was chosen and she was especially pleased to have Keurig included because she had gotten one of the company’s coffee makers at the Daytime Emmys and just loved it!”
So what were some of the other night’s hits?
“Jackie (Zeman), Leslie (Charleson), Adrianne (Leon), and Kim (Zimmer) - Bobbie; Monica; Brook Lynn, GH; Reva, Guiding Light – found a favorite in the Kept Couture bubble bath. Kim just kept smelling it; she was hysterical!” divulges Klein, a former journalist, whose next gig involves putting together a “funky-friendly” bag for another high-profile N.Y.C. benefit, Move Against AIDS, the five-hour dance-a-thon which will raise money for Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC).
“A lot of the guys, who you’d never think would care about fixing their teeth because they have perfect teeth already, were really interested in the Rosenthal Dental Group,” remembers Klein of Scott Bailey (Sandy, GL) and Jesse Sofer (Will, ATWT). “What it offered wasn’t a treatment, but a digital imaging enhancement. They show you the ‘before’ and ‘after.’ For example, ‘This is what your teeth would look like if you did X, Y, or Z.’ And people thought that this was the coolest thing.”
As was mentioned earlier, another eye-catcher was the urban Vy and Elle bag. “What I love about them,” answers Klein, “is the fact that they are made out of recycled vinyl billboards, so the colors are really amazing.”
This item proved to be the perfect travel companion for Matthew Ashford (Jack, DAYS).
“A couple of days after the St. Jude event, I had to fly to Los Angeles on business,” she begins. “While I was waiting for my return flight from L.A. to N.Y., I happened to see Matthew coming out of the same gate I was waiting to enter. So I asked him, ‘Where’s your bag?’ He told me that his wife had it, and that if they didn’t have the bag, they wouldn’t have been able to carry all their stuff home.”
Klein hopes to work with Byrne again at next year’s event as she, too, is a fan of St. Jude for more reasons than one.
“Obviously, it’s an amazing organization and the hospital is incredible,” notes Klein, a self-confessed DAYS lurker. “It’s because of the St. Jude event that I am where I am. ‘Daytime Salutes St. Jude’ is really the thing that launched me, in terms of celebrity-oriented affairs; before it, I mostly did smaller-events. This, after all, started out as simply a hobby.”
And now Klein’s hobby has made her the most sought after woman in daytime!
