Hold the phone! But whatever you do, don’t call “him.” That’s the advice Catherine Hickland (Lindsay, One Life to Live) adamantly recommends in her new book, “The 30-Day Heartbreak Cure, Getting Over Him and Back Out There One Month From Today.”
Soap opera actress, Broadway star, cabaret singer, small business owner, motivational speaker, licensed hypnotist, internet radio talk show host, and now a published author, Hickland decided it was time to put her own experiences with healing after failed relationships down on paper to benefit us all.
It all began nineteen years ago when Hickland was in a relationship that ended -- in her mind -- quite abruptly. “It was very painful,” she revealed to Soapdom. “I had myself convinced that I couldn’t get passed it.”
Then, the realization hit. “One day, I was sitting in my kitchen, my eyes red from crying, ears aching from waiting for the phone to ring. I was staring at a calendar, thinking when is this pain going to end? Suddenly, like a thunderbolt, the answer came to me. It’s going to end when I decide it’s going to end. I looked at the calendar, and I decided 30 days. It was going to end in 30 days. And I created a program for every day. It worked for me.”
And wouldn’t you know it? On day 32, the person called Hickland saying they made the biggest mistake of their life. A strong, healed, been-there-done-that Hickland replied: “Gee, you’re two days too late.”
Since then, Hickland has tweaked the 30-day Heartbreak Cure, formulating exercises and developing just the right affirmations. For the past 18 years, she’s shared the principles of her strategy with many people. “It’s worked for them, too! They all said, ‘you really need to write a book!’”
Hickland decided the time was right. “In writing the book, I used all the principles I’ve learned, and came up with a killer program.”
Killer is the word for it. “The 30-Day Heartbreak Cure, Getting Over Him and Back Out There One Month From Today,” is at once inspirational and tactical. It motivates while it provides concrete tools for getting by on day one, day two, day three, all the way up to day thirty! Each chapter is designed to get you through the breakup one day at a time.
On page nine, Hickland welcomes you to the beginning of your heartbreak. “As you and I walk this journey together, hand in hand, for the next thirty days, I’m going to be giving you a series of assignments and exercises, in a very deliberate order, one per day and only one per day,” she writes.
Why is only one per day the best strategy?
“Part of the problem with people today is that we get scattered,” she replied. “We overwhelm ourselves with info. We multi-task because we’re foced to in our jobs. With this book, you must focus on one thing at a time, complete it, and absorb it. That is the only way you will get it. If you read ahead you will get overwhelmed and you won’t finish it. That’s the way we are. We get overwhelmed and we don’t finish things.”
Hickland is with you every step of the way in “The 30-Day Heartbreak Cure.” She talks to you one on one, never down to you, never passing judgment. She reveals that she’s been there herself, right where you are today and she’s been there many times. In a caring and unhurtful way, never accusing, never blaming, she takes you inside some of her deepest thoughts and feelings about her relationship experiences including her marriages to David Hasselholf and Michael E. Knight (Tad, All My Children) and the way she manifested getting hired for a role on Broadway in Les Mis. You quickly learn that even a gorgeous soap opera star has had her share of heartbreak. She leads you step-by-step through your own journey in a very intelligent, powerful, self-healing way.
Not only is this book a must have for anyone getting over a heartache or relationship gone bad, but the same principals can easily be used to get unstuck in so many aspects of one’s life.
In Hickland’s own words, the “30-Day Heartbreak Cure” is
“a life guide. It goes way beyond the subject matter. Even men who have read it have told me that they have gotten so much out of it. If you’re dating, then this is for you. If you are thinking about getting out of a relationship this book is for you. If you are in a relationship, this book is for you.”
At its heart, the book teaches boundry drawing. “Knowing how to draw boundries is one of the hardest things to do without the tools -- and the book gives you the tools,” says Hickland. “We sure don’t get them in school. We don’t get them at home either. It’s not that we had bad parenting, it’s just that our parents didn’t know what they didn’t know, so how could they teach us?”
Along with culling from her own experience, Hickland did exhaustive research for the book. “When you do a self-help book, you take it pretty seriously,” she said. “I, myself, have a fantastic life and business coach. For years and years he’s been working with me on things. I would show him sections in the book and he helped me saying this would make sense. I had the counsel of a professional therapist. Now, we coach each other. I inspire him. Everybody needs to be inspired. Everybody. Now that I do this professionally -- I relationship coach people -- I can do trades with people. I do trading with other professionals. Everybody gets stuck. I just love, love, love what I do.”
Not only is Hickland now a published author and a relationship coach, she is the owner of Cat Cosmetics (http://www.catcosmetics.com ) a successful internet make up company with sell out appearances on QVC, she is a licensed advanced clinical hypnotist, has a new weekly internet radio show
(www.BlogTalkRadio.com/CatherineHickland ), is an inspirational speaker doing engagements around the country, and she continues to maintain her relationship with One Life to Live. But with a plate already quite full, Hickland is still not finished. Next on her agenda is hosting weekend self-help seminars.
“The seminars I am planning in the near future are not only about relationships, they will be about being stuck,” Hickland revaled to Soapdom. “We get lost and buried and we get ourselves convinced there’s no way out. I am a motivator. I want to get people together and say yes, you can do it! You can get unstuck.”
Hickland couldn’t be more excited about this next venture. She believes in her heart of hearts that this is her higher purpose – to help others. Having a rather successful acting, singing, and small business career, she still yearned to know what her true purpose was here on this earth. She’s prayed and prayed for guidance and has realized that helping and coaching people is her true calling. She promises that her new weekend seminars will be highly motivational -- the likes of which people have probably never been to before. “And they will be in a place that will be so much fun. At a price they will be able to afford.”
So, is Hickland’s mission to help others working? You bet. “I hear from people every single day,” she shared. “They contact me via my website (catherinehickland.com ), Facebook, Myspace. When people do the work, the work works. When I hear from people who have been held back by something and they are now able to let go, it’s inner peace. When I hear from them, it’s the greatest thing in the world for me.”
