She's back better than ever and hopes to stay

The old saying, ‘Been there, done that,’ couldn’t be further from the truth for Marilyn McIntyre, (Jo Johnson) of Days of our Lives. Talk about an actress that has done it all. Her bio is five pages long. A professional actress for over thirty years, McIntyre has tackled all facets of the medium. Now she’s back playing the role that is near and dear to her heart.

“It really is. I enjoy Jo so much. I’m a lot like her,” McIntyre shared with Soapdom. “ You know...I wear my heart on my sleeve like she does.”With five shows in the can, as McIntyre candidly puts it, she is hoping for more. Adding that Jo has much to do in the fictional town of Salem.

“She really does. She’s been on and off for several years. I’ve been coming back to the major events like weddings etc.  When I was called back now, I must admit that’s what I thought it would be,” McIntyre said. “But I find out that now my two sons, Jack (Matt Ashford) and Steve (Steven Nichols) are alive and back from the dead, so why not have Jo. I mean I’m their mother. It’s really time.”

McIntyre has been playing the on again off again Jo Johnson since 1993, after taking over the role from the late Joy Garrett. The character at one time was a contract role, and McIntyre would love it  to be again. Saying, “Heck yea! Why not? I’d love a full blown story. But I know it will rely on the audience’s response to me coming back.”

McIntyre openly said that one day she will approach the powers that be on the future of Jo. “I’m at a point in my life and career that I need to know where they stand and myself as well.”

Recalling her first day on the set some thirteen years- ago, McIntyre said it was a sad day because of the loss of Joy Garrett, but she realized that she was hired to do a job, and the show must go on.

”Boy you talk about last minute. Joy was still in the hospital, but we knew her chances of recovery were slim. My agent called and told me to get to ‘Days’. I auditioned and before you knew it, I was hired.” McIntryre said. “I knew nothing about the show. I was an ABC and CBS girl. I recall asking everyone to brief me, and they (cast) were great.”

McIntyre has had gigs on Search for Tomorrow (Dr. Carolyn Hanley), One Life To Live ( Astrid Collins), Loving (Noreen Vochek), before landing Days of our Lives.

McIntyre is very adamant about the expansion of Jo, and feels there is more then just being talked about over the years. She blurts out, “Heck, they married me to Vern Scoffield (Wayne Hefley) off camera. And they (show) only  mentioned it in the storyline. The viewer never saw a wedding. Hey you know guys...we were the hot seniors before Viagra!”

McIntyre was watching Days of our Lives  the other day, and had to chuckle at the credits. When her name came up she was referred to as Jo Johnson (which is what we will refer to her), but she said that the fact remains that it’s Jo Johnson-Scoffield.

“That’s what I mean. Show’s go through different writers’ and personal, and the history is lost,” McIntyre said. “Let’s get with the program. I’m supposedly married.”

All in all, McIntyre is having a blast with the character, and the time of her life. Saying that on her recent return, this is the first time she met Steven Nichols (Steve), and his reaction was like ‘You’re my mother. Heck, I look as old as you,’ (when Nichols was on, McIntyre was off the show),” McIntyre joked.
McIntyre loves soap operas, and said that they are an outlet for many people from our whacked out world. It’s comfort food, especially for the baby boomers. But added that soaps need to get back to...

...the core of the family. And veterans and older actors need to be brought back and reestablished.“We need those storylines back. Look in the 1970’s, why do you think “All in the Family” was a hit?” McIntyre said. “The young actors are fine, but they need the older family member behind them for a good conflict in the storyline.”

McIntyre is the recipient of many awards for her extensive theater work. She  appeared on Broadway and had leading scenes in “Revelation”, and “Gemini” off Broadway with the New York Shakespeare Festival.

She is also a founding member of LA’s Interact Theatre Company, and has also directed and produced several projects. She has guest starred in several series like “Cold Case”, and Judging Amy” Her film credits include, “First Daughter”, and “The Ring 2” to name a few.

McIntyre currently is in South Carolina where she is a faculty member at The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. She teaches acting, and is also on the faculty at the Howard Fine Acting Studio in Hollywood, teaching aspiring actors and seasoned actors brushing up on their craft. She is likewise an adjunct in the theatre Depart at the University of Southern California.

McIntyre said that she is an actor/teacher. She loves both. But, “the gig always comes first.”

Soapdom wants to know if you have a message to your fans? “I’m back!!!! We’ve all gotten older and better. I hope you’ll see more of me. There’s wit and wisdom when you get back to the family tree.”

Her hobbies include reading, walking, and visiting art museums and historical homes. “I love to observe how people lived. I love to learn the past,” McIntyre said.

Her other affection is going to thrift and resale shops and looking for clothes and accessories. Many times she buys props and clothes for theatre productions, and admitted that it’s like being on a treasure hunt.

“When I still find the tag on an item, I’m in heaven. Many times the item was never used and someone just decided to give it away,” she said.

McIntyre shyly admitted being “fixed and addicted” to Home Improvement Shows. “I love to organize. I’m just fascinated by the shows. Hey who knows...maybe someday I’ll host one?"
