It's fun as hell.

Meet NuWill – Jesse Soffer

Ever since the role of Will was taken over by Jesse Soffer, Soapdom’s been abuzz with fans praising the work of this new young actor.  So – we wanted to know what makes him tic and we sent our very own King of Buzz, Mark Edward Willows, to get the scoop. Read on –

When we last saw Will Munson (played by Brett Groneman) on As The World Turns he was a kid sent to a psyche ward for putting poison in Rose DeAngelo’s (Martha Byrne) mouthwash and murdering her on her wedding day. And in the world of soaps where children grow overnight, Will is back as a six-foot strapping young man played by Jesse Soffer.

“Yeah. I changed overnight,” Soffer joked. “I have to be honest, I love the role and am having the time of my life playing Will. It’s awesome. He’s a bit tormented, misunderstood, misguided, confused, and a good kid all in one package, and it’s all because of the influence his mother has on him. This is just a great part and fun as all hell. I love to see where it goes.”

The twenty year-old Soffer joined As the World Turns in August 2004 and has been working non stop with a role that seems to be growing and getting more complex with each passing episode.

“I don’t know much (about Will’s upcoming story). The powers that be don’t say, but what they have up their sleeve is interesting,” Soffer speculated. “I’ve always played the all-American guy. I like the little evil that Will possesses under his surface.”

Soffer joined the show not knowing much about the character of Will, but only asked to see tape of the wedding scene to study how Rose died.

Acting since he was six years-old with an ambition to do TV commercials, Soffer admitted that neither he nor his family had any inkling on how to go about it. Then one day he attended a barbeque with family members and he met a manager that passed on a business card, and as they say “the rest is history.”

Prior to his joining As the World Turns, Soffer played Bobby Brady in the 1995 “The Brady Bunch Movie” and in 1996’s “A Brady Bunch Sequel.” It was from his movie credits that he landed a role at 14 years old on Guiding Light, where he played the rebellious teen, Max.

“I believe that being on Guiding Light is what won me my role on As the World Turns,” Soffer said. “Someone from Guiding Light remembered me, and called this show and told them about me. Next thing you know I was called to come in and read.”

Soffer had the stars aligned when he auditioned for the role of Will Munson. He came in and read for Executive Producer Christopher Goutman, and won the role immediately without even a screen test.

“I’m still shocked every time I think about it,” Soffer said. “I received a call within five minutes, and the ironic part...I was still in the building. Everything just happened so quickly.”

Soffer said he adjusted to working with veterans like Colleen Zink Pinter (Barbara, his mother, shown at left) and Roger Howarth (Paul, his brother), because they’re so professional and so skilled at their work. They give awesome advice, and as an actor it’s neat to be able to feed off their work. They make you feel real welcome.

Soapdom wants to know what was your first day like on the set? “I have to admit I was a bit nervous,” Soffer revealed.  “And then there are the 75 pages of script that move fast, but like I said, the people from cast to crew are just wonderful and it makes you feel like you belong there. Everyone is so supportive of each other.”

Soffer lived in Connecticut and said the hardest part was to move to the big city (New York). “It’s a little intimidating and sometimes a bit scary, but I’m getting used to it,” Soffer confided. “I’m discovering that there are a lot of opportunities out here.”

Soffer is single and is currently seeing no one special. In his spare time away from the As the World Turns set, he is into reading and loves Philosophy and enjoys playing soccer. He also attends NYU part time and is majoring in Psychology. (Would you believe Will taking
psychology?) For the moment he wants to take college at a slow pace saying, “The chance of being on As the World Turns is too great.”

Downplaying his natural talent, Soffer would like to continue in acting and maybe someday get more into films. “I really love this business and find it fascinating. I believe it’s a bit of luck, the right look, and chance. I never had any formal training except a short workshop,” Soffer revealed. “Also the interesting part is you never know what comes up next in this line of work.”
