Vanessa Marcil (Brenda, GH)She's back! Fans have been clamoring for the return of Vanessa Marcil, who plays the fan favorite character of Brenda Barrett on General Hospital, for quite some time, and it looks like they are about to get their wish. Marcil has told Soapdom in the past how much she has always appreciated and loved her stints on GH and would return in the blink of an eye should the opportunity present itself. Guess what! It has!

Brian Frons, president, daytime, Disney/ABC Television Group, announced today that Emmy Award-winning actress Vanessa Marcil will return to "General Hospital" as Brenda Barrett, the role she created in 1992 and in which she won a Daytime Emmy in 2003 for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

"Fans can now rejoice, Vanessa is returning to 'General Hospital.' True to form, Brenda arrives in Port Charles with a secret that will impact Sonny, Jax and Jason," said Frons. "'General Hospital' has always been dedicated to the strong history of our characters. Fans and viewers alike will be thrilled with her storyline and will agree that her return was worth waiting for."

"We are so thrilled to welcome Vanessa Marcil home to 'General Hospital.' Vanessa is a wonderful, talented actress and her portrayal of Brenda makes her a force of nature in Port Charles," says executive producer Jill Farren Phelps.

"I feel so lucky to continue to be allowed to visit 'General Hospital' and honor where I came from," says Marcil. "I am humbled by these great people and a character that I truly love."

Brenda Barrett's return to Port Charles comes at a time when the three most important men in her life – Sonny, Jax and Jason – are all in crisis. Brenda's in trouble herself – when is she not? – possessing an explosive secret. Only she doesn't even realize it's something devoutly to be kept secret. Brenda has no idea the havoc this little indiscretion will wreak or that she'll send the lives of loved ones hurling into chaos.

Named to People magazine's "100 Most Beautiful People" list, Marcil was seen in many successful TV series, including "Las Vegas," "Without a Trace," "Lipstick Jungle" and "Beverly Hills 90210."

In case you didn't didn't know, GH is currently nominated for 18 Daytime Emmys (the most of any show this year). Winner of a record-setting ten Emmys for Outstanding Daytime Drama, the program celebrated 47 years of broadcasting on April 1, 2010, and is the longest-running dramatic serial on ABC, having aired over 12,000 episodes. "General Hospital" consistently rates as one of the top-rated Daytime programs in the key demographic of Women 18-49.

"General Hospital" was created by Frank and Doris Hursley. Jill Farren Phelps is the executive producer. Mary O'Leary, Mercer Barrows and Michelle Henry are producers. Robert Guza, Jr. is the head writer. Full episodes of "General Hospital" are available on ABC.com the day after airing on the network for users to watch online.

Marcil's first airdate is Wednesday, August 11.

Freddie Smith Puts Mark On Character

As an openly gay character, Freddie Smith (Sonny Kiriakis) of Days of our Lives loves the challenge of "capturing the character."

"I do! It's exciting to be able to play this role. This is a big hot topic (being gay) in today's society,"  Smith said. "By portraying this character, I feel like I am making an impact on society, and be able to shed light on something that many people have a fear of."

This week Smith along with Chandler Massey (Will) have shared their first on air kiss. "This role gives me the opportunity to share the variety of experiences of what it is like to be gay," Smith said. "It's like do I come out? Do I stay in? This is about showing two sides."
