New doctors and familiar faces round out the Night Shift

Kimberly McCullough (Robin, General Hospital)After weeks of anticipation, the first episode of General Hospital Night Shift season two aired on Tuesday.  The nighttime General Hospital spin-off revolves around the popular “Scrubs” characters, Dr. Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough) and Dr. Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson).    Season one characters Epiphany Johnson (Sonya Eddy) and Toussaint Dubois (Billy Dee Williams) returned for the second season.  New to the Night Shift family are interns, Dr. Claire Simpson (Carrie Southworth; ex Gwen, GH) and Dr. Kyle Julian (Adam Grimes).  Holistic Medicine doctor, Saira Batra (Azita Ghanizada), also joins the GH staff.  If his last name sounds familiar, it should.  Kyle Julian is the brother of Leo Julian.  Speaking of brothers, this time around Dominic Rains’ (ex Leo Julian, GHNS) older brother, Ethan, is playing Leo Julian.  Ethan has an extensive film, television, and theater background.  Daytime viewers may recognize him from his role as Zach on The Young and the Restless.  A big draw for season two is the return of fan favorites, Jagger Cates (Antonio Sabato, Jr.) and Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers).

This time around, Night Shift is supposed to “jive” more with General Hospital.  Season one confused viewers with the different happenings on both shows.  Season one was kind of strange in that by day Jason Morgan was a “mob enforcer” and by night he was sweeping floors in the ER.  The promise this season is that both shows will be more in synch.

The first episode started with a bang.  A woman crashed her car through the hospital killing Dr. Ford and injuring Robin.  I really liked Dr. Ford and I’m sorry to see him go.  His sarcasm and sense of humor (or lack of) will be missed, at least by me.  Patrick did his usual “mother hen” routine, trying to convince Robin to quit working until after the baby is born.  Being her usual stubborn self, Robin returned to work.

Patrick needs to take a couple steps back and let Robin make her own decisions.  Robin needs to be a little more open to Patrick’s suggestions.  She needs to respect his role as the baby’s father.  Either way, the two of them are much better together than they are apart.  Lets hope they stay together this season.

It’s difficult to accept new characters sometimes.  It takes a couple episodes for them to grow on me.  I really wasn’t that interested in Kyle until I heard his last name is Julian.  There’s clearly some deep conflict between brothers Kyle and Leo Julian.  How these two can be brothers confuses me though.  They don’t look alike in any way.  I’m just saying.  I’m not usually a fan of recasts but I love Ethan Rains’ version of Leo Julian.  Leo is a bit edgier this time around.  I hope we learn more about him this season.

We’ve been waiting years and years for Jagger Cates to ride back into town.  He’s finally here.  I remember the last time we saw Jagger – it was after his wedding to Karen.  The couple rode into the sunset on Jagger’s motorcycle.

I’m told we have to wait a couple more weeks to see Robert Scorpio.  I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

Past Blast

Former Days of our Lives stars in a band and are really rock'in

Chandler Massey (ex-Will) and Casey Deidrick (ex-Chad) of Days of our Lives are two rock' in dudes. The formers suds stars have been working non-stop since leaving the show on recording a song for people living with cystic fibrosis, and they recently released a video doing a cover of Miley Cyrus's number one hit "Wrecking Ball," which I may add is a must see.
