Soapdom's Official Coverage
The second NBC Fan Festival was a whopping success. At least, that's the way many fans felt as they got to get up close and personal with their favorite stars from NBC Daytime's Days of our Lives and Passions.
This was the second Fan Festival sponsored by the Peacock Network. The first, held November 11-12, 2000 at Universal Orlando's then newly opened "Islands of Adventure" theme park, coincided with the very popular ABC Super Soap Weekend #5, which took place the same weekend across Orlando at Disney/MGM Studios. NBC was scheduled to have a second Fan Fest in 2001, but cancelled it in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy.
This year, NBC made history when it partnered with sister network, Telemuendo, to bring together the biggest stars from both NBC Daytime and Telemuendo in one place at one time.
The weekend was April 5-6, 2003. The venue was the very intimate and easy-to-negotiate Hollywood & Highland Entertainment Complex. Hollywood & Highland is located in the heart of downtown Hollywood on historic Hollywood Blvd. It houses The Kodak Theatre, home to the Academy Awards, along with numerous shops, restaurants, and movie theaters -- the perfect place to bring together fans of NBC Daytime and Telemuendo in the gorgeous weather of springtime in southern California.
And thousands of fans participated. Somewhere between 10-15,000 were expected over the course of the two-day event. They were young and old. Men and women. Many were from Los Angeles area. Many came from out of town.
Stars from Days of our Lives and Passions mingled with fans at autograph stations set up on the different levels of the entertainment complex. Talk Shows, where fans in the audience got to ask questions of favorite stars, and even a segment where several lucky fans got to act on stage with a daytime actor, were interspersed throughout the day. A huge monitor set at the head of the Babylon Court at Hollywood & Highland promoted the various activities of each day. Admission was FREE and Johnny Grant, Mayor of Hollywood, named the weekend of April 5-6, 2003 “Fan Festival Weekend.”
Soapdom was there in full force and got to capture much of the event on film. We even cornered Sr. VP, NBC Daytime Programming, Sheraton Kalouria, and got him to share how he got into soaps. Did you know that he’s been a soap fan for years? The kind of fan who dashes home from school in time to see the outcome of a favorite storyline! Check our our exclusive coverage below!
