Late last week I received notice from not one, but two networks, that the honky-tonk, country band Rowdy was appearing at Universal City Walk’s Saddle Ranch on Saturday, September 27, 2003.  Why would two competing networks publicize this event?  That’s easy!  The front men for Rowdy are none other than soap star twins, Bruce Michael Hall (Joey, OLTL; ex Reese, PAS) and Seth Hall (Reese, PAS).  Having gotten the heads up from the publicists of both OLTL and PAS, we just had to go on over to Saddle Ranch last Saturday night and get Rowdy!

And boy oh boy, are we glad we did. These guys know how to have a good time.  It’s clear in their music and in their obvious joy in performing.  Bottom line:  Rowdy kicks butt!

Seth Hall (Reese, PAS) is the main force behind Rowdy, but he didn’t set out to front a band.  “I started doing singer songwriter nights,” Seth revealed. “I stole a couple of guys from the house band from where I was singing and it just turned out really well.”

It sure did.  Soon as Rowdy started playing last Saturday night, fans were up and on the dance floor jiving away.  “The audience likes us basically because we’re not as serious,” said Seth.  “It’s been really fun. It’s my little brainchild and it’s come out a lot more than I could have imagined. It’s been really fun,” he emphasized for a second time. “And I have great guys backing me up. It’s been a damn good time!”

Along with co-writing much of the band’s material with twin brother, Bruce, Seth also plays guitar, and sings lead with Bruce on the harmonies. They do a fair number of original songs, and cover a few others.  Seth derives inspiration from some of country’s and rock and roll’s greats like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and the King himself, Elvis P.

If you are wondering, Rowdy definitely likes to get rowdy. They down their beers between choruses, and whoop it up onstage.  Unencumbered with a musical instrument (although he does play the traditional stand up base), Bruce is known to jump off the stage and swing a lady around the dance floor for a few beats.  Much of their original material would definitely be considered beer-drinking music.  Not exactly the image their soap characters embody.

Case in point:  Seth plays Reese Durkey, the epitome of nerd.

Next case:  Bruce plays Reverend Joey, a man of the cloth.  When I commented to Bruce that his performance in Rowdy was a far cry from Rev. Buchanan, he laughed and said, “Yeah, that’s why they call it acting, baby!”  Singing in Rowdy is closer to who Bruce really is than Rev. Joey.

In fact, Bruce said that his fantasy storyline for Joey would involve his being a rock star.  “I’d be on stage and all the girls in the front row would flash me,” he said with a giggle.  “Wait,” he continued.  “That’s probably not a good thing to say.”  But we both agreed it would be a fun story to play!

Seth Hall (Reese, PAS)Seth’s fantasy storyline for Reese also includes a woman. “My fantasy storyline would be if Reese actually got a good hook up on Passions,” Seth said with a smile.  “I never get to hook up on Passions.  For gosh sakes. I am throwing popcorn, I am eating a lot of food, but I never get a hook up.  Get me a hook up story, seriously Passions. Thank you very much!”

Whether Seth gets his wish for Reese or not, we do know that Reese’ storyline will pick up for November sweeps.  Reese fans be sure to tune in!

Speaking of storylines, I had to get the word straight from the horse’s mouth. How did Passions approach Seth to take over in the role of Reese, after Bruce left for One Life to Live?

Seth Hall (Reese, PAS)“Passions knew that Bruce had a twin brother,” Seth said.  “But they didn’t know if I could act.”  They called Bruce’s personal publicist to get them in touch with Seth and had him come in for an audition.   They liked what they saw.  Seth, a PHD and a pharmacist, was the guitarist in the family, not an actor. But the opportunity to continue in the role that his twin brother originated was too much of a fun idea for Seth to pass up.

Meanwhile, I couldn't resist asking Bruce which network he liked better.  NBC or ABC?

"The mouse pays me more money," he said.  "But the peacock is great!"  He continued with a very matter-of-fact, "it's a business."

Now get this!  In a conversation with Rowdy’s publicist, I asked how often the guys worked out. They are both cut and buff.  “They don’t,” said the spokesperson.  “It’s genetic. Oh maybe they’ll do a few sit ups, but that’s about it.”

“No gym?” I questioned further.  “No free weights?  No cardio?”

“No,” said the spokesperson.  “They were born this way. You should see their father!”

Whoa.  I just thought of something.

Could you imagine if handsome Daddy Hall ended up on yet a third soap?

As the night was winding down, Rowdy got a surprise visit from friend, C.J. Thomason (Lucas, GH).  “I would have gotten here sooner,” said Thomason, “but I was stuck in terrible traffic on the 5 freeway!”  We all emphasized.  Traffic in and around LA is horrific.  Seth Hall (Reese, PAS), C.J. Thomason (Lucas, GH) and Bruce Michael Hall (Joey, OLT; ex Reese, PAS)No matter what time of day or night, you can conceivably be stuck for hours on a trip across town – something that should normally take about 20 minutes.   Good thing there are bands like Rowdy in LA.  Really helps you unwind.

But with Seth in LA taping Passions, and Bruce in NYC taping OLTL, how often do the twins get to perform together in Rowdy?  “Bruce was in LA last month,” said the spokesperson for the band, “and he’s here again this month. We try to get them together at least once a month.”

Or, you can catch Rowdy (sans Bruce) appearing every Sunday night at The Wild in Chatsworth, CA. (See Soapdom’s Seeing Stars.)

Bruce Michael Hall (Joey, OLTL; ex Reese, PAS)Of all Rowdy’s songs that night, my all time favorite had to be“Take My Keys,” the new single off their soon-to-be-released CD.  Not only is this a toe-tapping, butt kicking, honky tonk gem, it sends a positive message to listeners – don’t drink and drive.  Check it out here:  Take My Keys

Give it a moment or two to download!  It kicks butt.
