Another year down the hatch and ABC Super Soap Weekend once again bubbled over with fun. Daytime Emmy Winner Susan Lucci (Erica, AMC) headlined the 7th Annual Super Soap Weekend at Disney-MGM Studios, Orlando on November 9-10, 2002. Record crowds from all over the country came out to see
LaLucci and the star-studded motorcades, Q&A’s, Talk Shows, Game Shows, Street Jam Concerts, and to mingle with their favorite star.
Anyone who is anyone on All My Children, General Hospital, One Life to Live, and Port Charles, were sprinkled throughout the theme park at autograph-signing/picture-taking stations. Fans waited hours in line to get up close and personal with their favorite stars. In order to get a chance to speak personally with Susan Lucci, for example, fans had to acquire wrist bands beforehand.
Stars like Lucci and Jack Scalia (Erica and Chris, AMC), Vanessa Marcil (Brenda, GH), Kemar de los Reyes and Kassie dePaiva (Antonio and Blair, OLTL) and Thorsten Kaye and Brian Gaskill (Ian and Rafe, PC) couldn’t be more gracious and accommodating, trying to get in as many photos and autographs as time allowed.
Just imagine being Susan Lucci at Super Soap Weekend. Every waking moment of the day is “scheduled.” Park employees assigned to each actor zip them from station to station, event to event, on golf carts. Fans who have attended in the past know precisely where some of the actors will emerge to get to their autograph station. They lie in wait to sneak a photo before the actor takes his place under his designated autograph-signing umbrella.
For the actors, the event is an amazing show of appreciation for their efforts on the show. In speaking to them afterwards, every single one is on a high. For the fans, the event is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see any one of a number of their favorite ABC soap stars at one time in one place.
Meredith Vieira, host of the new weekday version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," was the special guest host for the Super Soap Edition of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire-Play It!" at the Disney-MGM Studios. Eva La Rue (Maureen/Maria, AMC)and real-life husband, John Callahan (Edmund, AMC) flanked soap
fan Tom Burroughs of High Springs, Fla., in the show's famous "Hot Seat" at one show.
