Who walked away as the biggest achiever?

Tony Geary (Luke, General Hospital)On The View, Wednesday, April 30, the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Nomiations were announced by some of soapdom's most popular stars including Marcy Rylan (Lizzie, Guiding Light), Van Hansis (Luke, As the World Turns), Allison Sweeney (Sami, Days of our Lives), Bryan Dattilo (Lucas, Days of our Lives), Farah Fath (Gigi, One Life to Live), John-Paul Laviosier (Rex, One Life to Live), Rebecca Budig (Greenlee, All My Chlidren), and Cameron Mathison (Ryan, All My Children).

Viewers were also treated to several fun clips from previous Daytime Emmy broadcasts including the mutual admiration society of Susan Lucci (Erica, All My Chldren) and Oprah; a tender father/daughter moment with John Aniston (Victor, Days of our Lives) and Jennifer Aniston; and the heartfelt and bellowing "thank you" by Tony Geary as he won his first Daytime Emmy. Gosh, remember all that blonde curly hair?

The Young and the Restless was the big achiever, taking away a total of 17 nominations.  Here's how all the stats break down:

(This list includes the creative crafts nominations, like lighting, makeup, etc.)

The Young and the Restless -- 17

Guiding Light -- 13

One Life To Live -- 13

As the World Turns -- 12

The Bold and the Beautiful -- 9

All My Children    -- 8

Days of Our Lives -- 6

General Hospital -- 6

Passions -- 4

The Young and the Restless -- 12

As the World Turns -- 6

Guiding Light -- 6

Days of our Lives -- 4

General Hospital -- 2

One Life to Live -- 2

Totally shut out of the actor nominations was Passions.  All My Children and the Bold and the Beautiful recieved only one acting/outstanding drama series nomination each.  Soapdom congratulates Days of our Lives on recieving four nominations in the acting categories.  It's been a long time coming.  Days actors have been almost shut out of the nominations in recent years. Soapdom can't help but wonder if the actors' work is being recognized this year in part due to the writing of Hogan Sheffer and his staff who were uncerimonously asked to leave after the writer's strike.

As previously announced, TV legend and talk show host Regis Philbin (“Live with Regis & Kelly”) will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during the broadcast ceremony.

Tickets for the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be available via Ticketmaster and at the Kodak Theater box office beginning Thursday, May 1, 2008.

The 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC FRIDAY, JUNE 20, from Hollywood’s famed Kodak Theatre at 8:00 p.m., ET/PT (West coast tape delay). This year marks the third time in the ceremony’s history the Daytime Emmy telecast will be presented from Hollywood. White Cherry Entertainment will produce the show, with Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss serving as executive producers.

The awards recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production and are presented to individuals and programs broadcast from 2:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. during the 2007 calendar year. “The 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” is a presentation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Days of our Lives makes history with first gay male wedding

The big day finally has come! Days of our Lives made history, and it was no April fools joke. The show is known for its long standing reputation for having storylines that are firsts, or tackling controversial subjects, or going out on a limb. I mean who can forget being possessed by the devil? Well! The show just aired the first gay male wedding making the first such event in daytime television.

The story was handled impeccably, and done tastefully. The same sex relationship has been moving slowing through trials and tribulations for the last several years.

First there was the acknowledging who you are. Then the accepting, and finally the coming out. And now the jubilant wedding of the duo known as WilSon. Will Horton (Guy Wilson) and Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) is taking the relationship into orbit, or like the old original Star Trek show said, 'to go where no man has gone before,' at least not on a daytime drama.
