Inside the Bubble - More on the Nominations

On Thursday, March 4, 2004 live on NBC’s Today Show, the nominations for the 31st Annual Daytime Emmys were announced.  Brian Datillo (Lucas, DOOL) made one small flub when he forgot to announce that the Ellen Degeneres Show was nominated for Outstanding Talk Show. “Now she’ll never invite me on her show,” an apologetic Datillo remarked to AMC’s Cameron Mathison (Ryan) who will serve as Extra’s Special Daytime Emmy Correspondent this year.

CBS’ The Young and the Restless garnered the most nominations for any daytime drama, walking away with 16.  They had 12 nominations total last year.

NBC’s growing-in-the-ratings Days of our Lives, always extremely popular with the fans, pulled in only 3 nominations this year, one less than last year.  Guess the Serial Stalker Story line isn’t generating as much buzz in the industry as it is in the ratings.  But NBC’s freshman soap, Passions, took in a record 7 nominations this year, including one for Outstanding Achievement in Directing for a Drama Series.

“The nominations bring Passions’ Emmy nods to 23 since the series debut on July 5, 1999,” said the spokesperson for the show.  “Passions’ quirky characters and classic love stories have generated interest and critical acclaim from the mainstream and daytime community.”

The ABC television network received 50 nominations.  General Hospital’s Tamara Braun (Carly) received her first nomination for Outstanding Lead actress for the role.  All My Children’s nomination for Outstanding Song “Dance Again With You,” also means a nomination for star Eva LaRue (Maria) who co-wrote the words and music to the song.  Nixed sudser, Port Charles, garnered two nominations, Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Thorsten Kaye's role as Ian, and Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series for Brian Presley's role as Jack.  AMC's Susan Lucci was not nominated this year.

Although CBS’ B&B only received one nomination in the acting categories (Jennifer Finnegan for her role as Bridget nominated for Outstanding Younger Actress), the show did garner one for Outstanding Daytime Drama.  Figure that.

Overall, CBS received 53 Daytime Emmy Award nominations, topping all other network totals, with all four daytime dramas nominated for Outstanding Drama Series.  Here’s what their nominees had to say when they heard the great news:

Michelle Stafford, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominee for her portrayal of Phyllis Abbott on Y&R remarked:  "Acknowledgements are few and far between, so you've got to take them when you can.  It never gets old and the older you get, the more you appreciate it!"  Stafford won an Emmy Award in 1997 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for this role.

Eric Braeden, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series nominee for his portrayal of Victor Newman on Y&R said  "One always feels deeply honored and I appreciate it enormously."  Braeden previously won this award in 1998.

Grant Aleksander, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series nominee for his portrayal of Phillip Spaulding on GL stated:  "I am always honored that a group of my peers felt I did a good job on that particular day.  It is a nice pat on the back."  Aleksander was previously nominated in the category for this role in 2003.

According to Sharon Case, Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series nominee for her portrayal of Sharon Newman on Y&R:  "Thanks to the voters and I am really flattered. You made my day."  Case previous won this award for this character in 1999.

Perhaps the most vocal, Cady McClain, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nominee for her portrayal of Rosanna Cabot Montgomery on ATWT reflected:  "I was the most excited for Maura [West, nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress].  I think she’s terrific.  I was thrilled also for Agim [Kaba, Outstanding Younger Actor].  It was fun to be there when Roger [Howarth, Outstanding Lead Actor] found out -- I don’t think he was expecting it.  I felt proud to be recognized in such a talented group of people.  It was an uproarious group out there in Brooklyn this morning.  First we got drunk, then we got naked -- just kidding, not really."  McClain won an Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actress in 1990.

Back in Los Angeles, Christian LeBlanc, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series nominee for his portrayal of Michael Baldwin on Y&R said:  "It's always exciting to be nominated.  We have a tendency to downplay awards, but we should get together and celebrate what we do.  I'm thrilled we all get to do that."  LeBlanc has been nominated three previous times for this award.

Bradley Bell, Executive Producer and Head Writer of Outstanding Drama Series nominee, B&B bellowed:  "I’m thrilled!  Two nominations in a row for the only half-hour daytime drama. It’s a great nod to our entire team."

Christel Khalil, Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series nominee for her portrayal of Lily Winters on Y&R:  "This is my first time going to the Emmys and I'm thrilled to be going as a nominee!"

Lauren Woodland, Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series nominee for her portrayal of Brittany Hodges on Y&R  pictured here with co-star John Enos (Bobby) remarked:  "This year I’m starting my fifth year on 'The Young and the Restless' and this is my first nomination.  It feels so wonderful to be thought of by other actors in daytime as someone whose work should be considered for this award.  It is a real honor and I’m very flattered."

Jennifer Finnigan, Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series nominee for her portrayal of Bridget Forrester on B&B stated:  "Brad Bell called to congratulate me.  I’m so grateful to be acknowledged and I’m really excited.  What a beautiful way to leave things."  Finnigan previously won this award in 2002 and 2003 and now stars on NBC’s primetime show, Crossing Jordan.

Agim Kaba, Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series nominee for his portrayal of Aaron Snyder on ATWT marveled:  "59 phone calls by 2:00 PM!  Wow -- what a great feeling!  I just feel lucky to be a part of the As the World Turns' family -- they are my family here in NYC."

The 31st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on NBC on Friday, May 21 from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (ET).  The Creative Craft Daytime Emmy Awards, primarily for the creative arts categories, will be presented at ceremonies on Saturday, May 15, in New York at the Marriott Marquis Hotel and in Los Angeles at the Kodak Theatre Ballroom.
