What it's like for a non-celebrity to attend the Daytime Emmy's

For weeks my sister Amy had been taunting me with the fact that she got me the "perfect Mother's Day gift." Since I'm her sister and not her mother I thought this was quite generous of her. Anyway, Mother's Day comes and boy was I pleasantly surprised to find in my card a ticket to the 27th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards! I had planned on spending Friday night, May 19th, becoming one with my couch and a pint of Chicken Chow Fun, so this was a major change in plans! I had never been to an award show, let alone a show featuring my favorite daytime stars. Oh my God! I was going to the Daytime Emmy Awards!

The first thing that came to my mind was what I was going to wear. I know the stars get all dolled up for these events, but I was going to be sitting in the second mezzanine. I figured I could leave my ball gown in the back of the closet.

All week I had daydreams of walking up the red carpet to Radio City Music Hall. I figured that I would be hobnobbing with all my favorite celebs. I imagined the conversation I would have with David Canary (Adam/Stuart, AMC) and how I would tell Oprah how much I admired her. I pictured myself shmoozing with the Toms (Heather and David, Victoria and Billy, Y&R) and asking Regis (Philbin) for his final answer. People who knew me could totally understand my excitement. I am, after all, the "Soapchick," and this was a dream come true for me! I decided to take Friday off from work since I would've been too excited to sit at my desk. I slept late, went for a walk, had my nails done and headed to NYC for what was destined to be the most exciting night of my life!

On the way to meet my sister for dinner before the show, I spotted Patrika Darbo (Nancy, DOOL) on the street. She was wearing a turquoise colored dress with matching shoes and looked beautiful. Even though I'm not fan of Days of Our Lives, I knew who she was from the soap magazines. I knew that she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress (she lost to Sarah Brown, Carly, GH) and was trying to imagine how she was feeling. Here's this Emmy nominated actress walking the streets of NYC looking very relaxed and at peace with herself. I had to smile. I was barely able to sit through dinner in anticipation of the night's events, and Emmy nominated Patrika Darbo was calm and collected! Somehow, I did manage to get through dinner, and it was finally time to head to Radio City Music Hall.

Amittedly, it was a big disappointment to learn that I would not be walking down the red carpet as I had imagined. It turned out that the stars entered through one door and everyone else entered through another. The stars' entrance took them right into the main auditorium at Radio City. The rest of us came into the lobby. When we got there, the place was packed! I looked around but didn't spot anybody famous.

The lobby was filled with people (mostly women) dressed in everything from pantsuits to skirts to long gowns. Everyone looked so glamorous to me. My sister and I decided to position ourselves near the entrance to the rest rooms figuring even soap stars have to go sometime. Wouldn't you know it! There was a guard posted near the steps leading to the rest room. We couldn't even use the same toilet as the stars! We decided to stand there anyway.

On a rare occasion, a star did enter the Music Hall through the front door and when that happened, they were immediately swarmed with screaming fans. First, four-time Outstanding Actor winner and current nominee, David Canary (Adam/Stuart, AMC) came in. He is my absolute favorite soap star and in my humble opinion, the best actor on daytime television. My sister (with her paparazzi mentality) was able to push her way through the crowd to get his photo. She told him that he had to win that night (sadly he lost to Anthony Geary, Luke GH) and he shook her hand and introduced his daughter. She was quite thrilled to say the least.

The next stars to enter were Kathie Lee and Frank Gifford…whatever…I really didn't care. I then noticed those cutie patooties and multiple nominees from Y&R, Camryn Grimes (Cassie) and Bryant Jones (Nate). They walked across the lobby, arm in arm. They were very gracious when fans swarmed them, but being that they are only about nine years old, it must have been overwhelming for them. (I'm happy to report that Grimes took home the award for Best Younger Actress!)

While I was still posted by the bathroom steps, I spotted Tracy Bregman Recht (Lauren, Y&R, B&B) heading down the stairs on the arm of her husband. She looked great! She cut her hair very short and was wearing a knockout dress. (I must mention that if you think the actresses on the soaps look thin, remember that the camera adds ten pounds…you should see them in person. I wanted to offer a few of them a cookie!) I told Tracy that I was happy she was returning to Y&R and she asked me to drop the producers a note expressing that sentiment. She then graciously posed for a photo.

As soon as the flash faded, my sister and I followed the crowd to the front door. In walked Michael Nader (Dimitri, AMC) who seemed overwhelmed by the screaming fans.  He was telling everyone to back up. I guess he should have come in the side door like most of his co-stars! Right behind him was Mathew St. Patrick (Adrian, AMC) who is even more beautiful in person! My sister got close enough to rub his head "for luck!" What a good sport. He smiled for a few photos and then ducked into the auditorium. By this time it was almost show time and we had to climb the stairs to our seats in the second mezzanine.

Far as mezzanine seats go, ours weren't too bad. We were pretty high up but dead center and since Amy had binoculars, I got to scan the front row of the orchestra section. Through the binoculars I spotted Kristoff St. John (Neil, Y&R) hugging Shemar Moore (Malcolm, Y&R, who would later that evening call his mom from his cell phone when he won Outstanding Supporting Actor!). I also spotted Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), Rosie O' Donnell, Robert S. Woods (Bo, OLTL), Regis Philbin and his wife and many other beautiful people!

As it turned out, I was apparently seated in General Hospital territory, and seemed to be the only Y&R fan in the section. Since Y&R had a great night (Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Supporting Actor, Outstanding Younger Actor and Outstanding Younger Actress) I was the only one on my feet hooting and hollering for my show! I also happen to be a lifelong fan of All My Children and was gutted that David Canary (Adam/Stuart) did not win. Oh well, better luck next year!

One of the highlights of the evening came as we headed home. Upon leaving Radio City Music Hall we spotted Robin Christopher (Skye, OLTL) and her new hubby, Matt Crane (ex Matt, AW) holding hands while they chatted with fans outside the theater. Aw, how sweet, we thought. We then made our way to the D train and again spotted Robin Christopher and Matt Crane standing steps from us on the subway plaform. This time they were doing a lot more than just holding hands. They were making out! They were oblivious to everything and everyone around them. They only had eyes for each other. I thought it was cool that they ditched the crowds and the limos to rush home (via the subway, no less) to continue their honeymoon! Ah, true love.

It was such a thrill being at The 27th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. I plan on attending again next year. Only for the 28th Annual Daytime Emmys, forget the mezzanine. I intend to be sitting right there in the orchestra section with all the beautiful people!
