Soapdom’s Lesleyann Coker was on the Emmy red carpet last week to interview daytime television’s hottest stars.  This is her report.

Leann Hunley (Anna, Days of our Lives)Soapdom’s Exclusive Daytime Emmy Red Carpet Coverage

The red carpet was sweltering hot for the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards and not only because of the star power on display.  On a day when the temperature in Los Angeles hovered near 100 degrees, daytimes’ finest were forced to wipe the sweat off their precisely plucked brows as they made their way down the red carpet and into the Kodak Theater for the ceremony.

One of the first stars to brave the extreme heat was the glowing Leann Hunley (Anna, Days).  She looked surprisingly cool in her beaded pale lavender gown designed by Pol Atteau.  She admitted she had been offered a diamond studded bag to carry on the red carpet, but turned it down because of its size.  “I couldn’t fit more than one tube of lipstick and I need three,” she said with a laugh.

Hunley also confided that her Emmy nominated co-star, Thaao Penghlis, “is the best leading man I’ve ever had and I’ve kissed a few!”

Robert S. Woods (Bo, One Life to Live) Another leading man to make his way through the gauntlet of press and fans was OLTL’s Bob Woods (Bo).  When asked over the noise and commotion what he was wearing, Woods shouted back, “a tuxedo,” which he then confessed was “not even my own suit!”

Judith Chapman (Gloria, Young and the Restless) A star who wore her own garments was the divine Judith Chapman (Gloria, Y&R).  “Everything is out of my closet,” she explained about her geisha ensemble.  “I’ve had everything for years.  It’s an antique kimono so I don’t know [the name of] the Japanese designer.”  She also kept cool by carrying a fan and a parasol that stayed within the geisha theme.

Blake Berris (Nick, Days of our Lives) An actor who knew exactly what he wanted was Blake Berris (Nick, Days), who Soapdom found a lot more handsome in person than the nerdy character he portrays on screen.  When asked what he was most looking forward to about the evening, he told Soapdom, “I’m kind of hungry.  I’m most looking forward to eating!”

Berris was there to support his nominated co-star.  “I’m rooting for Rachel Melvin (Chelsea, Days) for sure.  She’s an extraordinary actress and I love working with her, and Darin (Brooks; Max, Days) as well.  It’s an honor for them to be nominated.  I’d like to see them go all the way.”

Winsor Harmon (Thorne, Bold and the Beautiful) Winsor Harmon (Thorne, B&B), handsomely attired in a John Richmond tux, also had praise for his co-stars.  “The kids that have been coming in have been doing really well.  A lot of times you’ve got to pull them aside and work with them a little bit and say ‘calm down, don’t be so nervous,’ but they’ve got confidence with them.  It’s a breath of fresh air to get somebody new to come in and get to play off of them.  I’ve really enjoyed working with the kid who plays Marcus [Texas Battle].  We had a couple good scenes the other day.  He went toe to toe.  There are going to be a lot of things that blow up pretty soon.”

Harmon teased Soapdom with hints about upcoming storyline details.. “I like what we’re doing right now.  There’s going to be a big shake-up coming and the children get ready to take a stand against Donna, and it’s going to be fun.  There’s a lot of great things getting ready to happen.  I think next year’s going to be good for us with the Emmy’s.  We’ll have a good year,” he predicted.

Lesli Kay (Felicia, Bold and the Beautiful) Harmon’s co-star, Lesli Kay (Felicia, B&B), attired in a short zebra print dress by Lloyd Klein and high heels by Carmen Steffens, admitted that the Emmy after-parties “are the only reason I’m here.”  Kay raved to Soapdom about her shoes.  “I went out and bought them myself yesterday.  They are the most comfortable shoes on the planet.  I wore them last year too.  If I had on a long dress, I would have worn flip-flops but it’s the catch of wearing a short dress.”

Robert Newman (Josh, GL) and daughter, Kendall The delightful Robert Newman (Josh, GL) passed Soapdom’s spot on the red carpet wearing an Armani tux, with his charming daughter Kendal on his arm.  Newman confessed he wasn’t initially thrilled with GL’s new hand held camera format, but now he says he’s warming up to it.  “I’m hoping those who didn’t care for it early on will feel the same way I am.  The first few times I watched it, it was difficult, it’s a different look, but we’re settling into it.  I’m enjoying it more.”

Adrienne Frantz (Amber, Young and the Restless) Next down the red carpet was Adrienne Frantz (Amber, Y&R), who has clearly settled into the role of movie star.  Dazzling in a purple gown by Dina Bar-El and an upswept hairstyle, the star was eager to talk about her new role.  “I’m doing a film called the Fifth Mafia, with Armand Assante, Joe Mantegna, Eric Balfour, William Forsythe, James Van Der Beek, a bunch of people.  I play Armand Assante’s wife.  It’s a mafia movie and I play the wife of the head of the mafia.  It’s a fun role.”

Frantz said if there’s an actor’s strike they might get a waiver to keep filming or the movie might have to wait until after a strike.  “It’s supposed to start shooting next week, but I have a strong feeling there will be a strike, so I hope it will all be okay.”

Billy Magnussen (Casey, As the World Turns) Another budding big screen movie star on the red carpet was the charismatic Billy Magnussen (Casey, ATWT), wearing a suit by Nautica.  He stopped to talk to Soapdom about his upcoming movie, Happy Tears, starring Demi Moore and Parker Posey.  “I play this guy Ray who’s actually the yard worker for Parker Posey and Demi Moore, and he has a little scandal with those two.  A little scandal and intrigue.  I always get hired to take off my shirt,” he said with a laugh.

Sebastian Roche (Jerry, General Hospital) An actor who is staying behind the scenes for his latest movie is GH’s Sebastian Roche (Jerry) who just returned from a trip to Sudan and Uganda.  “I’m shooting a documentary about child soldiers in Sudan,” he told Soapdom of his latest venture.

Bryaan Dattilo (Lucas, Days of our Lives) Bryan Dattilo (Lucas, Days) was also looking forward to his upcoming work schedule, albeit for much different reasons.  After commenting on all the “racks” on display on the red carpet, he proceeded to fill Soapdom in on Lucas’ suddenly active love life.  “Lucas hooks up with Chloe now, so next thing you know I’ll be sleeping with Morgan,” the actor said with a grin.  “I’m really looking forward to my work this summer.”

Sporting a free watch by Charlie Lapson and a ring of his own design, Dattilo joked the watch “makes me two inches taller.”

Mary Beth Evans (Kayla, Days of our Lives) Dattilo’s co-star, Mary Beth Evans (Kayla), clad in a black cocktail dress by Nougat, was glad to see some diversity in the Emmy nominations.  “It’s nice to see a more eclectic group and not just the same old names.”

An actor making his second appearance on the red carpet as a Daytime Emmy nominee was Van Hansis (Luke, ATWT), who admitted to Soapdom he did not have a speech prepared.  He was wearing a pocket watch for good luck.  “[The watch] is special to me for reasons that only I know.”  Hansis also stated that the person he was most looking forward to meeting was Whoopi Goldberg.  He walked the red carpet with Jake Silbermann, the other half of the popular Luke/Noah (Nuke) super-couple.

Shawn Christian (Daniel, Days of our Lives) Shawn Christian (Daniel, Days) told Soapdom he’s hopeful his character’s relationship with Chelsea has super-couple potential.  “I hope so.  That’s not up to me.  I’m just going to go in and put in the work and hope the relationship makes sense and is successful.”

Christel Khalil (Lily, Young and the Restless) Christel Kahlil (Lily, Y&R), dressed in a sparkling cream dress by Mandalay, revealed that when she returned to Y&R last year, “It felt great.  My first day back was very strange but after that it felt like I had never left.”  Kahlil said she’s enjoying her pairing with Daniel Goddard (Cane).  “The fans love it and so I like it.  I like what the fans like.”

Emily O'Brien (Jana, Young and the Restless) Kahlil’s co-star, Emmy nominee Emily O’Brien, looked stunning showing some leg in a flowing pale green Roberto Cavalli gown.  She brought along her family and friends as her good luck charms.  “They’re tagging along with me and they’re wonderful.  I couldn’t ask for better people.”  O’Brien’s plans for the evening included meeting some of her favorite stars.  “I really want to meet Giada De Laurentiis and I would love to say hello to Jennifer Landon (Gwen, ATWT).  I think she’s wonderful.  I’ve met her before, she’s in my category, but I love her.  And Ellen [DeGeneres].”

The effusive O’Brien also had high praise for Caitlin Van Zandt (Ashlee, GL).  “She’s a great actress.  I adore her and I went up to her last night and told her.”

Kate Linder (Esther, Young and the Restless) Y&R’s Kate Linder (Ester), who recently earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, stopped by to visit with Soapdom and show her support for her nominated show and co-star Jeanne Cooper (Katherine).  Linder, who looked ravishing in a form fitting black and white dress by Lloyd Klein, said, “Our 17 nominations are unbelievable and it’s an honor just to be nominated for the show, but of course I would be thrilled if Jeanne won.  She so deserves it, and I would be so happy.  She’s my number one pick.”

Emmy nominated Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) continued the Y&R parade, stopping by in a low cut gray and white Dina Bar-El gown.  She said her good luck charm was “Christian LeBlanc (Michael, Y&R), but lately he’s been bad luck, so we’ll see.”

Arianne Zucker (Nicole, Days of our Lives) Soapdom's Look Like a Soap Star columnist, Arianne Zucker (Nicole, Days of our Lives) looked amazing in a voluminous black and white Ella Zahlan gown with her own good luck charm, husband Kyle Lowder (Rick, B&B) on her arm.  “It’s Italian couture and the same designer as Nadia’s (Bjorlin; Chloe, Days) dress,” Zucker shared.  Lowder showed his aptitude for fashion by wearing a Hugo Boss tux with a Yves Saint Laurent shirt underneath.

Susan Lucci (Erica, All My Children) Other Soapdom red carpet sightings: Y&R’s Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) in a regal white Christian Dior gown; Days’ Alison Sweeney (Sami) in a green Eduardo Lucero gown; AMC’s Melissa Claire Egan (Annie) in a brown Calvin Klein cocktail dress; AMC’s Susan Lucci (Erica) in a strapless teal Carlos Miele gown and Y&R nominee Kristoff St. John (Neil) in a Hugo Boss tuxedo.  St. John had his hands full with his five-year-old daughter Lola, who walked much of the red carpet with her dress over her head.  When she wasn’t lifting up her own dress, she was trying to pull down the skirt of her teenage sister Paris.

Ashley Jones (Bridget, Young and the Restless) Soapdom’s last two visitors were Ashley Jones (Bridget, B&B) and Vail Bloom (Heather, Y&R) who greeted each other warmly on the red carpet by telling each other how beautiful the other looked.  Bloom even praised Jones’ tiny waist.

Jones, who looked mesmerizing in a mermaid style black and white fringe dress by Ella Zahlan, was rooting for B&B to pick up some wins.  “We’re up for Directing and Writing and Heather Tom [is also nominated].  I really hope we get a good start on the night with Heather winning for Supporting right off the bat.  That’s exciting.”

Bloom was the last star to leave the red carpet as the countdown to the start of the show began.  She was dressed in a flowing maroon Marchesa gown that looked suspiciously like the turquoise Marchesa gown GL’s Beth Ehlers (soon to be ex-Harley) was wearing.  Bloom said to Soapdom over her shoulder as her publicist rushed her into the Kodak Theater, “My grandmother is here.  She’s my good luck charm.”

With that, the red carpet was over for another year and it was time to mop up the sweat and get ready for the show to begin.
