Pine Valley’s loss is Genoa City’s gain

Vincent Irizarry (ex David, AMC; David, Y&R)Vincent Irizarry (David, AMC), who taped his last scenes in Pine Valley earlier this month, has announced on his official website that he is now heading to The Young and the Restless in the role of David Chow.

When Soapdom got word that All My Children was sending Vincent Irizarry (Dr. David Hayward) packing, we were beside ourselves with disappointment.  After all, the devious Dr. Dave had won Soapdom’s Cybby Award for Soaps Most Devious Doctor in 2003, 2004 and 2005.  Originating the role in 1997 (“I’ve been playing David for eight years,” Irizarry expounded to Soapdom back in 2005.  “It was only supposed to be a three-month gig!”), David was the kind of character many fans loved to hate, and the panache with which Irizarry played the role gave the character many dimensions and interest.  You sometimes found yourself  rooting for him even as he was doing something dastardly, like poisoning a yacht full of partygoers; switching someone’s DNA; arguing with and plotting against his mother, Vanessa, or; breaking up the marriage of one of All My Children’s favorite super couples, Tad and Dixie.

For the past several years, however, David Hayward has been relegated to back burner status, hardly having a storyline of his own.  It actually came as no surprise to us that the powers that be would cut Irizarry loose. They hadn’t written a compelling story for his character in so long.

When fans heard that he was on his way out, petitions were circulated, an online campaign begun, but the die was already cast.  We then began hearing rumors that Irizarry was being wooed back to a CBS show, Guiding Light.  He had originated the character of Lujack, a role he played for two years from 1983 to 1985. He went back to GL in 1991 as Lujack’s twin brother, Nick, and played Nick for five years, but Lujack is the character that most remember.  “Lujack was a ground breaking role,” Irizarry told Soapdom in a previous exclusive interview. “It was an extraordinary character.”

So we all waited with baited breathe to see when/if Guiding Light would make the official announcement.  When the show spokesperson admitted that she had not heard anything in regard to Irizarry’s heading back to Springfield, our radar was piqued.  Then, we were blown away this past weekend when Irizarry announced on his official website that he was indeed headed to a CBS soap, but not Guiding Light. He was tapped to play the role of David Chow, a man with a past connection to the recently murdered Carmen, on The Young and the Restless.

Apologetic to his fans for keeping mum for so long, Irizarry stated on his website that he was sorry it had taken all this time to let everyone know.  “I was expressly given instructions from the show’s PR department not to make any formal announcements until they deemed the timing to be right,” he wrote.  “They’re extremely protective of storyline and the like on this show as I have come to learn, since I’ve been sitting on this information for over a week now, so I’m sorry if it felt like as if I was keeping you all out of the loop. It was never my intent or desire, but I do want to respectfully honor their wishes.”

Irizarry continued by saying that there will be more info to come and encouraged everyone to keep their television sets glued to CBS in the daytime and “join me on Y&R, the afternoon’s #1 show…”

Irizarry begins taping on the Young and the Restless on Tuesday, November 21 and will start airing January 9, 2007.
