Aside from playing Erica Kane on “All My Children” for thirty six years, Susan Lucci is probably best known for losing the Daytime Emmy 19 times. When she finally won the coveted award in 1999, it was a historic moment not only for La Lucci, but for television as well. TV Guide calls her “unequivocally the most famous soap opera character in the history of daytime TV.” Not to mention, one of the most married divas in all of daytime. After all, Erica’s full name is Erica Kane Martin Brent Cudahy Chandler Montgomery Montgomery Chandler Marick Marick Montgomery.
Lucci is one of “AMC’s” last few original cast members. When the daytime serial premiered in 1970, she was just a teenager and student at New York’s Marymount College.
Her role on AMC has garnered her many awards and accolades aside from the Daytime Emmy. She has won the 1992 People’s Choice Award, the 1993 Soap Opera Digest Award, the 1994 Crystal Apple Award, the 1985 People magazine poll as Best Soap Actress, and the 1988 Soap Opera Digest Editor’s Award, among others. Lucci was also selected as an honoree of the American Academy of Achievement Award in 1991. She is also listed in the “Who’s Who in America” directory. In 2005 she was awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, only one of three other daytime actors to achieve such a distinction.
In addition to her daytime fame, Lucci is also well known for her leading roles in several made for TV movies including French Silk, The Woman Who Sinned, Double Edge, The Bride in Black and Ebbie. She also starred on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun, and has taken a cabaret act on the road with good friend and fellow performer, Regis Philbin.
Outside of acting, Lucci enjoys traveling and playing tennis. In addition, she tirelessly volunteers for several charity organizations around the New York area. In 2000, she became the celebrity spokesperson for the March of Dimes’ National Ambassador campaign. Ten years ago she launched the Susan Lucci Collection of beauty products and recently her own fragrance. In 2001 she launched a jewelry, shoes and accessories line and in 2003 she introduced her lingerie line for “beauty of all ages.” To further her empire, Lucci also has a microdermabrasion system, called Youthful Essence. She is also the first daytime actress to have her own Mattel doll inspired after her AMC character.
If all that wasn’t enough, Lucci has been presented with a “Key to the City” by former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani, received The Ellis Island Medal of Honor, has been named one of E! Entertainment’s Top Entertainers of the Year and even been one of Barbara Walter’s most fascinating people.
Lucci is married to her manager, Helmut Huber and they have two grown children, Liza and Andreas. Liza stars on the soap opera, Passions as Gwen Hotckiss. Lucci and Helmut live in an affluent New York City suburb.
Lucci is 5’3 and celebrates her birthday on December 23rd -- the same day as former AMC co-star John Callahan (Edmund).
Regis Philbin is the man credited with giving Lucci the now famous nickname of LaLucci. Also, daughter Liza Huber (Gwen, Passions) was the first person Lucci called when she won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series in 1999.
