Julia Barr joined the cast of “All My Children” in the role of Brooke English in 1976.
Barr grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana where she caught the acting bug at age 13. She began acting, dancing and singing in every local production Fort Wayne had to offer. She then attended Purdue University where she continued performing. After graduation, Barr moved to New York City and has been one of those lucky actors who have continued to find work.
Barr’s role on “AMC” has garnered her several awards and nominations. She is an eight time Emmy nominee and a two-time winner (Outstanding Supporting Actress). In 1990, she also took home the Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In addition to her work on “AMC,” Barr has been featured in various guest-starring television roles, films and off-Broadway plays.
Barr is married to Dr. Richard Hirshlag, her husband of over 20 years. The couple has a 20 something, Allison, who starred for a time as Lizzie on Guiding Light. In her spare time, Barr devotes her energy to The Fund for Animals, a cause that she embraces wholeheartedly. In addition to her love of animals, Barr spent two years as a volunteer for The Coalition for the Homeless’ First Step Program, an innovative job-readiness program for homeless women.
Barr and her family reside in New Jersey. Her household also includes a feisty dog named Nell (a greyhound and German shepherd mix adopted in October 1996); two independent cats (Dinah and Goldie); a "neurotic" parakeet, and a rabbit named Louis. She celebrates her birthday on February 8th and stands 5’1.
