David Canary joined the cast of “All My Children” in 1983 as the powerful and mercurial Adam Chandler and his twin, soft-spoken, kind hearted, Stuart Chandler.
A native of Elwood, Indiana, Canary grew up in Ohio and attended the University of Cincinnati on a football scholarship. He graduated as a music major specializing in voice.
When Canary ventured into acting, he began his career on the Broadway stage. His Broadway debut was in Jose Quintero's production of "Great Day in the Morning," with Colleen Dewhurst. Then came a draft call from the U.S. Army. When Canary left the service, he restarted his career on the West Coast, starring in "The Fantasticks" in San Francisco. Television and movie roles followed. Most notably was his role as “Candy” on the primetime series “Bonanza.”
Obviously, AMC has been Canary’s most popular and well-known role. He has won five Emmys for his portrayal and received three more nominations. “It’s fun playing two roles,” says David. “The roles provide a wonderful range of emotions. Stuart is childlike and sensitive. Adam is ruthless, outrageous. He’s flamboyant. He does the unexpected.”
Canary lives on the East Coast with his wife and their children. He is 5’11 and celebrates his birthday on August 25th.
