Rick Hearst (Whip, Bold & the Beautiful)It's official. In a true soapdom shocker, Rick Hearst (still airing as Ric on General Hospital) will resume the contract role of "Whipple Jones," on the Bold and the Beautiful it was officially announced today.

Hearst originated the character, often referred to as "Whip," a devious company publicist who manipulated "Brooke Logan" (played by Katherine Kelly Lang) into marrying him in exchange for guarding the secret that she was pregnant with her son-in-law's child, in 2002. This time around, "Whip" returns to Los Angeles to

work for Jackie M. at the request of the meddling "Stephanie Forrester" (played by Susan Flannery).

Hearst has a long and esteemed career in daytime. In addition to his previous stint on The Bold and the Beautiful, he portrayed "Ric Lansing" for six years on General Hospital, for which he received four Daytime Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards, and he portrayed "Alan-Michael Spaulding" for six years on Guiding Light, for which he garnered five Daytime Emmy nominations and one Emmy Award. Hearst has also portrayed "Matt Clark" on The Young and the Restless and "Scotty Banning" on Days of Our Lives. His other credits include a lead the feature film Carpool Guy and guest-starring roles on the primetime television series Charmed, Beverly Hills 90210 and Pacific Blue, to name a few.

But this move to B&B is rather sudden to say the least. One day Hearst was engrossed in the middle of a major storyline on General Hospital and  the next day, he's on his way to Bold & the Beautiful.

The way we heard it was he just uncerrimoniously gets into an elevator at General Hospital after yet another face off with Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Claudia (Sarah Brown) regarding the baby she's carrying and the baby's paternity, and that's it. He doesn't even say good bye.

Soapdom is not quite sure what happened behind the scenes but we do know that no sooner did Hearst leave GH, Bradley Bell, Executive Producer of the Bold and the Beautiful, rang him up offering the role of Whip. Needless to say, Hearst didn't think twice.

Hearst began taping The Bold and the Beautiful in mid-May. His first airdate is scheduled for July 17, 2009.

I'm sad and disappointed that Rick is going but given our economy it's nice to hear that he's joined B&B. Also, I'm glad to hear that Ric Lansing won't be killed off - so far at least.
